Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You give a clear overall view that the development is positive, and your points about gaining subject knowledge and improving job prospects are relevant. However, the response addresses the task only partially: the benefits are asserted more than explained, and the examples remain general, such as “one of the student” choosing a subject, without a specific illustration of how wider course choice helps. The conclusion repeats the position but adds little development. The response contains 222 words, so it is 28 words below the 250-word minimum; the 27 words copied from the prompt are not counted. To strengthen the response, explain both how increased participation and a wider range of courses benefit people or society, and support each point with a concrete example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic essay structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs signposted by “firstly” and “secondly,” and a conclusion. This gives the reader some sense of organisation. However, progression within paragraphs is often unclear, and ideas are repeated rather than developed. For example, the first body paragraph moves from subject knowledge to course availability and job offers without clearly showing the links between them. References such as “there” and “it” are also difficult to follow, while “so that” is used repeatedly and sometimes awkwardly. Use clearer topic sentences, connect each explanation directly to its main point, and vary linking expressions. Check that pronouns clearly identify the person or idea they refer to.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “specific subject,” “university,” “knowledge,” and “job opportunities,” so the main ideas can generally be understood. However, the range is limited and several words or phrases are repeated, particularly “get,” “better,” “student,” and “specific.” Some combinations are unnatural or imprecise, such as “best offer for jobs” and “good at gain knowledge,” which make parts of the message harder to interpret. Aim to use more precise academic collocations and avoid repeating the same general verbs. For example, describe how courses “provide specialised knowledge” or “improve employment prospects.” Also check spelling and word forms, including “their” where you mean possession and “students” when referring to people in general.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You attempt to express reasons and examples using longer sentences, and the basic meaning is often recoverable. However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and errors are frequent enough to make some sentences difficult to follow. Examples include “it help to student,” “which there have choose,” and “if a students has studies,” where verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction are not controlled. Several sentence boundaries are also unclear, as in “firstly students can gain there knowledge on that specific subject. which there have choose.” Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then combine them with clauses using “because,” “which,” or “if.” Pay particular attention to subject–verb agreement, complete sentences, and punctuation.
