IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries these days, the number of people continuing their education after school has increased, and the range of courses available at universities and colleges has also increased.
Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays, in majority of countries, the number of students getting higher education has increased. The variety of fields available at universities and colleges has also risen. Getting further education can help a country's literacy rate to go up, whereas increase in the range of courses is better because students can study subjects they are actually interested in. I believe, this is a positive development.
More number of students choosing to get higher education after school is highly significant for a country's future because the literacy rate among youth will increase. More people will get educated, and they will be able to differentiate right from wrong without becoming blind followers. They will learn to question things and choose the leaders for their country wisely, using their analytical skills rather than becoming a blind follower. For example, countries with high literacy rates have reported to have less crimes as compared to the countries with lower literacy rates.
Moreover, increase in the range of courses available at universities is a positive development as well, because students can choose the subjects that they are most interested in, and build a successful career in their desired field. In the past, it was not easy for students to choose the career of their own choice due to limited range of courses being available. This will be a positive development for job opportunities. For instance, in the past times, people would want to move to other countries in search of better educational opportunities and would get jobs in their relevant fields abroad. A lot of countries were struggling due to this issue.
In conclusion, the increase in number of students getting higher education has a positive impact on a country's literacy rates and the diverse range in courses can help an individual choose better career options.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear from the introduction: you consider both the growth in higher education and the wider course choice to be positive. You address both parts of the topic and give relevant reasons, including improved literacy and the chance to pursue a suitable career. However, the first argument moves from education to better political judgement and lower crime without explaining the links in enough detail. The example about people moving abroad is also not fully connected to how a wider range of courses creates better opportunities. Develop these points with a clearer cause-and-effect explanation or a specific example, so the support is more consistently convincing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs addressing the two developments, and a conclusion that restates your view. Paragraphs generally progress logically, and linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “For example,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. This organisation is effective, while some connections between claims could be made more explicit. For instance, the move from analytical skills to lower crime in the first body paragraph is abrupt, and the example about migration in the second does not clearly demonstrate the preceding point about course choice. Use referencing and transitions to show precisely how each example supports its claim, rather than relying mainly on familiar linking phrases.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “literacy rate,” “analytical skills,” “range of courses,” and “educational opportunities,” and your meaning remains clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “differentiate right from wrong.” Some word choices and collocations are less natural or repetitive: “More number of students” and “increase in the range” could be expressed more idiomatically, while “blind follower” is repeated. “In the past times” is also awkward. Aim for more precise, natural combinations and vary repeated terms; this would make the argument sound more fluent and controlled without changing its meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a contrast with “whereas” and clauses introduced by “because.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “in majority of countries” needs an article, and “I believe, this is” has an unnecessary comma. In “the literacy rate … will increase,” the singular form is understandable, though the surrounding generalisation could be expressed more consistently. The sentence beginning “For instance, in the past times” also contains a long sequence of ideas that would benefit from clearer clause structure. Check articles, punctuation, and sentence boundaries, while continuing to use varied structures.
