IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries these days, the number of people continuing their education after school has increased, and the range of courses available at universities and colleges has also increased.
Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
At present, people are continuing their education even after school , also, the range of courses at universities and colleges has also increased. This is absolutely a positive development.
In the past, individuals tend to discontinue their schooling for various reasons. Either they were forced to stop their career or get engaged in some job in order to support their family financially. We can see many old people sharing their life experiences indicating that neither they were allowed to pursue higher studies nor the range of courses available at that time was wide. The possible reasons could be unavailibility of advanced technology, absence of complex roles and the simpler way of living.
However, the present case scenario is completely different. Due to growing demand and advance facilities, demand for experts have increased. Now it is compulsory for students to get the highest possible degree in order to do complex roles.
Moreover, the competition has increased building pressure among pupils to pursue higher knowledge. People now study until they complete PHd. This helps them earn respect in society. I myself want to pursue my masters abroad to get my dream job.
Moreover, the range of courses has also increased to offer varieties of options to graduates. The fact that everyone is not capable to do the same work and not everyone is equally skilled has lead to introduction of wider range of opportunities. This has improved self confidence in many people. Now a days, everyone has this chance to present their skills and to get a job of their choice. This is no doubt a positive development.
Therefore, the improvement is highly positive as the nation can develop in numerous ways by expanding the number of courses and supporting students to continue their education.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear from the opening and conclusion: you regard increased participation in education and course choice as positive. You address both developments, explaining that further study can help people qualify for complex roles and that a wider range of courses lets people pursue work suited to their abilities. These are relevant reasons. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained: for example, the claim that higher qualifications are now compulsory and that studying until a PhD earns social respect would benefit from a specific example or clearer qualification. The discussion of past barriers is relevant background, but it takes space without directly strengthening the evaluation. Develop the main benefits more fully and show how they affect individuals or society.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall structure: an introduction states your view, body paragraphs discuss past and present education and course choice, and the conclusion restates the positive judgement. Paragraphing helps the reader follow the main stages. Linking expressions such as “However,” “Moreover,” and “Therefore” make relationships between points visible, although “Moreover” is repeated and some transitions feel mechanical. The progression within the second body paragraph is less clear: competition, completing a PhD, social respect, and your personal ambition are placed together without fully showing how each supports the central argument. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each example explicitly to the benefit being discussed; vary linking devices and use pronouns or reference more precisely.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use an adequate range for the topic, including terms such as “higher studies,” “complex roles,” “graduates,” and “self confidence.” These help communicate your ideas about education and employment. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “present case scenario,” “advance facilities,” “pursue higher knowledge,” and “offer varieties of options.” Spelling and form errors, including “unavailibility,” “PHd,” and “self confidence,” also reduce precision. Aim for familiar, accurate academic collocations rather than elaborate phrases: for instance, say “current situation,” “advanced facilities,” and “a wider variety of options.” Proofreading for spelling and consistent word forms would make your vocabulary more controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional-style explanation beginning “The fact that everyone is not capable…” and a reason introduced by “in order to.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. Examples include the agreement error “demand for experts have increased,” the tense choice “individuals tend to discontinue” in a past-time discussion, and the construction “has lead to introduction,” which needs a past participle and an article. Punctuation is also uneven in the opening, where a space appears before the comma and two clauses are joined awkwardly. Work on subject–verb agreement, past-tense consistency, articles, and sentence boundaries, while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
