IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries these days, the number of people continuing their education after school has increased, and the range of courses available at universities and colleges has also increased.
Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays in most of the countries, the amount of people resuming their studies after school has increased, as well as the scope of courses available at universities and colleges has also increased. I totally believe this is a positive development.
The increase of the number of people continuing their education after school produces more job opportunities and contributes to the society as well as the development of the country. Industries that require specific job applicants will be filled with qualified people. As these industries start to grow they can contribute to the economy of the country. I have personally noticed that people who are educated have more knowledge about politics too. Therefore, voting for the right person in the elections can also help the society grow.
A greater range of courses means people can choose the field that interests them the most. Many students have to select courses that the do not have a great interest in because of lack of courses in the university. This causes the students not to reach their full potential as they unwantedly studied that course. Having a greater range of courses can help the students to choose the field of their interest and specialize in it. I personally wanted to take data science in my university that was not available in most of the universities in my country due to which i decided to study abroad.
In conclusion, educated people can contribute more to their society and country. The greater range of courses can help students specialize in their specific interest of field. Therefore, i believe this is overwhelmingly a positive trend.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you consider the rise in further education and course choice positive. You address both developments, giving relevant reasons about qualified workers, national growth, and students choosing subjects that interest them. The personal example about wanting to study data science also supports your point. However, some ideas are less fully developed than others: the link between education and voting for the “right person” is asserted rather than explained, and the employment argument would benefit from a specific example. The response is 249 words, so it falls one word short of the 250-word minimum; the 19 words copied from the prompt are not counted. Develop one or two points further to make the case more convincing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs discuss the benefits of education and course choice, and a conclusion restates your position. Ideas generally progress in a logical order, and linking expressions such as “Therefore” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. However, some connections are mechanical, and the relationship between ideas is not always made explicit. For example, the move from qualified workers to political knowledge in the first body paragraph could be linked more clearly, while “As these industries start to grow” leaves the cause-and-effect relationship somewhat vague. Use more precise referencing and transitions, and ensure each paragraph develops one central point in a connected sequence.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss education and its social effects, including “qualified people,” “economy,” “specialize,” and “full potential.” These choices communicate your main ideas, and the data-science example adds useful specificity. However, several word choices and collocations are awkward or imprecise, such as “the amount of people,” “job applicants will be filled,” and “unwantedly studied.” Repetition of “increased,” “greater range,” and “contribute” also limits flexibility. Aim for more natural academic phrasing and check collocations: for instance, industries can “employ qualified workers,” and students may “study a course they did not choose willingly.” More precise vocabulary would make the argument clearer and more fluent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses beginning “As” and “because,” and most of the meaning remains clear. Some sentences are controlled, such as “A greater range of courses means people can choose the field that interests them the most.” However, there are some grammatical errors and awkward constructions. In “the amount of people,” the countable noun requires a different determiner; “the do not have” contains an incorrect pronoun, and “i” should be capitalised. The sentence beginning “This causes the students…” also shifts awkwardly between present and past forms (“causes” and “studied”). Review articles, pronouns, verb consistency, and punctuation, while continuing to use complex structures.
