IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries these days, the number of people continuing their education after school has increased, and the range of courses available at universities and colleges has also increased.

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

I strongly agree with this view that it have mostly positive impact on people Life because that facility there is alot option available for the people they can choose according to their choice and it also in encourage people.

Because that things in past people how can not want to do difficult courses now they have several other options according to their convenience that help them to do well in study. However people enjoy doing different courses .

There is time when one my friend want do his degree in acting courses but there was no such course exist that why he took engineering course but because of his lack of interest his doesn't do well .

There also recently example of my life a took break from study because i was not interested in the which i was doing but when i visit my college campus again and kearn about that there is a course of music is available i felt extremely happy because of that i continue ny study again in music ut happened that found my favorite course.

In my opinion that change have alot positive impact that minimal side effects it contains it remain unseen because of there alot positive impact

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You take a clear overall position, stating that the increase has a “mostly positive impact,” and your examples about your friend and your own return to study are relevant to the benefits of having more course choices. However, the response addresses the question only partially: it focuses almost entirely on personal choice and does not explain other possible effects or develop the claim that the benefits outweigh the “minimal side effects.” The examples are also brief, so the reader gets little detail about how course availability improves outcomes. The response is 204 words, below the required 250, which limits the space available to explain and support your ideas. Develop each example and connect it explicitly to your overall judgement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation: you begin with your opinion, give examples, and end by restating that the development is positive. The two personal examples also provide a basic sequence from limited choice to finding a suitable course. However, the overall progression is not consistently clear, and the first paragraph’s ideas run together. Connectors such as “Because” and “However” are used inaccurately or do not show a clear relationship between sentences; for example, “However people enjoy doing different courses” does not contrast with the preceding point. Paragraphing is limited, and the final sentence repeats the position without summarising the reasons. Use separate paragraphs for your argument and examples, and make each linking phrase express the intended relationship.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use some vocabulary relevant to education and choice, including “courses,” “convenience,” “lack of interest,” and “positive impact.” These terms help communicate the main topic, but the range is limited and several phrases are inaccurate or repetitive, which sometimes makes your meaning difficult to follow. For instance, “alot option available” and “there is a course of music is available” do not express the ideas naturally, while “do well in study” is an awkward collocation. Spelling errors such as “kearn,” “ny,” and “ut” also reduce clarity. Build a bank of accurate phrases for discussing access to education, suitability, and outcomes, and check spelling and word forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You attempt to combine ideas using clauses, as in “because of his lack of interest,” and you use both present and past forms to describe general views and personal experiences. However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and attempts at longer sentences often contain frequent errors that make the reader work to understand the meaning. Examples include “it have mostly positive impact,” “one my friend want do,” and “his doesn't do well,” where verb forms, agreement, and sentence construction are faulty. Articles and punctuation are also inconsistent, and several sentences run together without clear boundaries. Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then join them with correctly formed subordinate clauses and check subject–verb agreement and tense.
