IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries these days, the number of people continuing their education after school has increased, and the range of courses available at universities and colleges has also increased.

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Nowadays, in most of the counrties there are universities that are providing extra courses after the school which is very beneficial for the students. these courses give too much knowldge to the students and they can learn alot from it. mostly stydents can also decide about their future goals and what thet they want to be in their future, because these course give them the real world picture inorder to assess their self. they becomes capable for what they are into and what they can do in their future.

the interest of a person in any field can lead him/her to the maximum of their competency level, and by these courses they are caapble to see their intrest level and hence they can brightnen their future by these courses.

these courses had a vide virety of it. it is started in almost all the fields of medical and engeneering as well. some are diplomas and mostly they called it certificates in the specific courses. it brings up thhe knowldge and competency level in the peoples and they can modify their skill, knolwdge and competency based on the couses expertises.students can also chose their carrer pathway by doing these diplomas or certificate courses.

in my personal opinions it very beneficial and everyone should these courses because it enhances your knowldge and skills by giving you advanced knowldge in that specific are and spefic course. the students can become more competent and will become master trainers on that are and can get experitise. its also beneficial to get your self confidet in the area where anyone feels weakness or habe less knowldge, they can target the specific area and give modified and advanced knowldge.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you consider the growth in further education and course choice beneficial. You give relevant reasons, including helping students identify career goals, assess their abilities and improve skills; the examples of medical and engineering courses also relate to the topic. However, the discussion is only partly developed. Several points repeat the general claim that courses increase knowledge or competence, while the benefits are not explained with a specific example or a clear account of how wider course choice helps different students. The response also focuses mainly on extra courses rather than addressing both the increase in participation and the expansion of course options in a balanced way. Develop fewer reasons more fully and connect each directly to the question.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic paragraph structure: it introduces the positive view, gives reasons and examples, and ends with a personal opinion. This provides some organisation, and phrases such as “because” and “hence” attempt to show relationships between ideas. However, progression within paragraphs is often unclear, and several sentences repeat similar claims about knowledge, skills and competence rather than building a distinct argument. References such as “these courses” recur without always making clear which courses or benefit is meant. Some linking expressions are awkwardly used, and the final paragraph introduces further points without organising them into a clear conclusion. Use topic sentences, group related ideas, and make each paragraph develop one main reason in a logical sequence.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “competency,” “certificates,” “career pathway” and “specific area,” so the reader can generally identify your intended meaning. However, the range is limited and many key terms are repeated, particularly “courses,” “knowledge” and “competency.” Frequent spelling errors, such as “knowldge,” “stydents” and “engeneering,” make the writing less clear and reduce accuracy. There are also unnatural word combinations, for example “real world picture,” “maximum of their competency level” and “master trainers,” which do not express the ideas precisely. Build a wider set of accurate education and career collocations, and check spelling and word forms carefully before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences with reasons, such as the sentence beginning “mostly students can also decide about their future goals” and the clause introduced by “because.” This shows an effort to connect ideas, but the range of sentence structures remains limited, and complex attempts are often faulty. For example, “these courses give them” shifts awkwardly into “they becomes capable,” while “everyone should these courses” is missing a verb. Sentence boundaries and capitalisation are also inconsistent, as in the lowercase “these courses” after a full stop. These errors sometimes make the reader work to understand the intended meaning. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement, complete sentence patterns, articles and punctuation, then vary sentence structures while maintaining control.
