IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries these days, the number of people continuing their education after school has increased, and the range of courses available at universities and colleges has also increased.
Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays, with the rapid development of society, an increasing number of students are continuing their education after school, and universities are offering a wider variety of courses. While some people may argue that this creates unnecessary competition and financial pressure, I firmly believe that it is a positive development because it improves career opportunities and allows students to develop specialised skills. This essay will explain why I hold this view
To begin with, one major reason why I believe this is a positive development is that higher education improves the rate of litereacy of a country. This is mainly because higer studies broaden thier horizon and after completing thier studies they are eqipped with both practical and theoratical knowledge which employers values and require Consequently this will provide them an emploment opportunities. continuing education after school and learning range of courses opens the gate to the new carrer paths. This is beacuse new technology is evolving day by day and new designations are created accordingly.for example artifical intelligence is increasingly spreading across every industry , field and organisation. So adapting and learning about emerging technologies will develop professional skills which are crucial for future job requirements.Another significant reason is that wide range of courses develops critical thinking, problem solving, communication skills, cognitive enhancementand increase thier intellectual curiosty. this will lead students to do inventions and contribute towards societies.Another significant reason is that offering a wider range of university courses enables students to pursue careers that match their interests and abilities.
In other words, learners are no longer limited to traditional subjects and can choose modern fields such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity or environmental science.
For instance, many universities now provide specialised programmes that prepare students for rapidly changing industries.
Consequently, graduates become more competitive in the global job market and contribute to technological and economic development.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that the growing number of students pursuing higher education and the increasing variety of university courses represent a positive development because they improve employment prospects and encourage specialised learning. Therefore, the benefits of this trend clearly outweigh any potential disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
Your position is clear throughout: you regard the increase in further education and course choice as positive, and the introduction and conclusion reinforce this view. You address both trends and give relevant reasons, including improved employment prospects, specialised skills, and the ability to study subjects such as artificial intelligence or environmental science. These points are supported with examples, so the response meets the task well. However, some claims are broad or only briefly explained. For example, the link between higher education and a country’s literacy rate is asserted rather than demonstrated, and the point about critical thinking and social contributions is not developed with a specific example. Explaining these ideas more precisely would make the argument more convincing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable introduction, body discussion, and conclusion, and the overall position is easy to follow. Connectors such as “To begin with,” “For instance,” and “Consequently” help signal relationships between ideas. However, the central body is difficult to navigate because several distinct arguments are crowded into one long paragraph, and the repeated phrase “Another significant reason” makes the progression feel repetitive. The transition from literacy to technology and then to critical thinking is abrupt, while the later paragraph about course choice partly repeats the earlier point about career opportunities. Use separate paragraphs for each main reason, organise supporting examples directly after the relevant claim, and vary linking language to create clearer progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of topic vocabulary, including “specialised skills,” “emerging technologies,” “critical thinking,” and “global job market.” These expressions help communicate the main ideas and show attempts to use language beyond basic vocabulary. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “litereacy,” “higer,” “thier,” “eqipped,” and “emploment.” Some phrases are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “opens the gate to the new carrer paths” and “cognitive enhancementand increase thier intellectual curiosty.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding your position, but they reduce precision and fluency. Proofread carefully and choose natural collocations, for example, “opens up new career paths” and “stimulates intellectual curiosity.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including complex clauses with “While,” “because,” and “Consequently,” and several sentences communicate complete ideas clearly. However, grammatical control is uneven, particularly in the long body paragraph. For example, “employers values and require” has a subject–verb agreement problem, and “This will provide them an employment opportunities” has an unclear grammatical pattern and article/plural mismatch. Sentence boundaries and punctuation are also inconsistent: the introduction ends without a full stop, and several ideas run together without appropriate punctuation. The sentence beginning “Another significant reason is that wide range of courses develops…” also needs clearer structure. Aim for shorter, well-punctuated sentences and check agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries.
