IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries these days, the number of people continuing their education after school has increased, and the range of courses available at universities and colleges has also increased.
Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In the recent time, I belive there is a positive development of continuing the education after school has increased including the range of courses also available at universities and colleges.
On the one hand, when we look at the past data, people were not interested in studying after school and no multiple options or wide range of courses were available. Due to financial conditions and lack of awareness people were not participating willingly in education. Apart from this, there were several reasons of not continuing the education after school. I would also include about women education in the past where number of women were very less who did their studies after school because eventually, after schooling they got married and started looking after their families.
On the other hand, there are multiple choices available for people after completing their school education. Even number of women studying science and other technologies have increased in several years. People can pursue their dreams because of many universities and colleges which provides various options in the field of study. I would have to say that no colleges and universities were there when I was in my hometown however, I have been there recently and I saw a huge goverment college is being built there with a wide range of courses. Now, rural areas are also getting improved by the government so people can study further. One of the main reason is the technology and employment rate where people know that without higher studies they won't be able to pursue successful career.
To conclude, this is really a positive development that number of people have increased who have the willingness of studying further even after school. This is going to make huge difference and will reduce the crime in the society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear: you consider the growth in further education and course choice positive, and you address both increased participation and wider access. The examples about women’s education, rural areas, and the new college in your hometown make the response relevant and show some personal support. This meets the task well overall, but the development is uneven: the historical reasons for low participation are listed rather than explained, and the claim that further education will “reduce the crime in the society” is introduced without evidence or a clear link. To strengthen the argument, explain how broader course choice benefits individuals or society, and support each main claim with a specific example. The response shows some development beyond a basic position, but not all ideas are consistently extended and supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The progression from past barriers to present opportunities is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “To conclude” help identify the stages of the argument. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, and some links between ideas are unclear. For example, “Apart from this” does not clearly show how the next point relates to financial barriers, while “One of the main reason” shifts abruptly from access to technology and employment. The conclusion also adds a new claim about crime rather than drawing together the points already discussed. Use more precise links and organise each paragraph around a clear central idea.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including topic-related expressions such as “wide range of courses,” “financial conditions,” and “employment rate.” There are also attempts to use more formal language, for example “pursue their dreams” and “positive development.” However, word choice and collocation are often imprecise or repetitive, which limits clarity and flexibility. Phrases such as “in the recent time,” “people were not participating willingly in education,” and “huge difference” do not sound natural in this context. Spelling errors such as “belive” and “goverment” also affect accuracy. Aim to learn common academic collocations and check spelling carefully; more precise wording would make your argument sound clearer and more controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “because” and “where,” and most of the meaning remains understandable. However, some grammatical errors recur in sentence construction, agreement, articles, and verb forms. For instance, “the number of people continuing their education … has increased including the range” is not formed clearly, and “universities and colleges which provides” has a subject–verb agreement error. In “number of women were very less,” the noun phrase and verb agreement are also problematic. Some sentences become difficult to follow because several ideas are joined without clear grammatical control. Practise building accurate sentences with one main clause and a clearly attached supporting clause, then check agreement and articles when editing.
