IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries these days, the number of people continuing their education after school has increased, and the range of courses available at universities and colleges has also increased.

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Yes,in my opinion the number of people continuing there education after school is a positive change.Because by continuing education increase the knowledge of the persons and they become more talented and professionally trained. In the school people often learn basic things and they are also immature to know what they do in their professional life. They can't understand things properly at school level because at school level there is limited resources to teach people. So they don't get good idea about their professional life. That's why,it is good point that people can continue their education after school.

It is also a positive point that courses are increased in university and colleges. As the rang of courses increased poeple get more opportunities to choose their professional plateforms. Also people get different ideas about things they neglect and they do not knowing. Thus these course also increase their curiousty to learn about different things. In this way, those small issues and problems are become easy to find when people observe things deeply.Due to having multiple courses in universities and colleges people are able to wide their vision and they work on different ideas .Also people can choose different courses according to their choice and they try different things. In this way, people learn to handle different situations and they become multitalented. Also these people are able to handle hard and tough things easily.

In conclusion,I would like to say that both continuing education after school and range of increasing courses in universities and colleges is a positive thing.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you consider both further education and the wider choice of courses to be positive. You give relevant reasons, including gaining professional skills, exploring interests and learning to handle different situations. However, these points are often asserted rather than explained or supported with a specific example. For instance, you say that more courses help people “wide their vision” and become “multitalented,” but do not show how a particular course or learning experience produces these outcomes. The discussion also repeats the general benefits of choice without considering any possible drawback or developing one example in depth. To strengthen the response, explain the cause-and-effect behind your main reasons and add a concrete illustration that supports your position.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an opening paragraph gives reasons for continuing education, a second discusses the range of courses, and a conclusion restates your view. This makes the overall direction understandable. However, progression within the paragraphs is limited, and several ideas repeat rather than build on one another. Connectors such as “Also,” “In this way,” and “That's why” are used frequently, sometimes without showing a precise relationship between the ideas. For example, the move from courses increasing curiosity to “small issues and problems” becoming easier to find is not clearly explained. Use fewer repeated linking phrases and organise each paragraph around one main point, followed by explanation and an example. Clearer links between sentences would make the argument easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some vocabulary relevant to education and work, including “professionally trained,” “opportunities,” “curiosity,” and “different situations.” These choices help communicate your main ideas. However, the range is limited and several words or phrases are repeated, particularly “people,” “different,” “positive,” and “courses.” There are also noticeable spelling and word-choice problems, such as “rang,” “poeple,” “plateforms,” and “curiousty,” as well as unnatural expressions like “professional plateforms” and “wide their vision.” These sometimes make the intended meaning less clear. Build a more precise vocabulary for discussing education and career choices, check spelling carefully, and learn common collocations as complete phrases rather than translating them word by word.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt some longer sentences and use clauses to explain reasons, as in “Because by continuing education increase the knowledge of the persons and they become more talented.” However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make parts of the response difficult to read. Examples include the incomplete opening construction “Because by continuing education…,” the agreement error “both … is a positive thing,” and “those small issues and problems are become easy.” Sentence boundaries and punctuation also need attention: several sentences run together after commas, and spaces are missing after punctuation. Practise forming complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, checking agreement and verb forms, and separating independent ideas with full stops. More accurate control of these basics will make your reasoning clearer.
