You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, an increase has been observed in the number of students pursuing higher education with a vast range of subjects offered at universities and colleges. In my opinion, this change will surely bring a positive impact on the country's overall development. This essay will look into some of the positive effects of having more students enrolled in a variety of subjects offered at universities and colleges.

First of all, develpoment stage of a country is determined by the number of people pursuing higher education. It has direct effects on the literacy rate of the country. The nation evolves around new technological trends, innovations and better infrastructure, if the people are more educated and professional.

Secondly, a variety of subjects offered at universities and colleges provide students a chance to choose and study a field of their interest and passion. Diverse academic options available at universities reduce the unemployment by having people in different fields. It increases long- term job satisfaction and helps them improve their performance. Moreover, to keep up with the new trends, any education system must consider the need to adopt a wide range of courses in order to compete and match the pace of the modern world. The advancement becomes limited with the limitation of knowledge.

To conclude, expansion of the higher education and course options is the need of the hour. There are few challenges but the goverment should take steps to eliminate those factors by providing a good annual budget because the positive outcomes of this development outweigh the negatives.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you consider the growth in higher education and course choice a positive development. You address both aspects of the prompt and give relevant reasons, including improved literacy, technological progress, and better alignment between students’ interests and careers. However, some claims are asserted rather than explained. For example, the link between higher education and a country’s development is broad, and the claim that diverse courses reduce unemployment would be stronger with a specific example or explanation of how this happens. The conclusion briefly acknowledges challenges but does not identify them. Develop the main points with concrete examples and explain the effects more fully to make the response more convincing and complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs signposted with “First of all” and “Secondly,” and a conclusion. The ideas generally progress from national benefits to individual and economic benefits, so the reader can follow your argument. Cohesion is sometimes mechanical, however, because the paragraphs rely heavily on basic sequencing phrases, and several ideas are placed together without showing their precise relationship. For instance, the second body paragraph moves from course choice to unemployment, job satisfaction, and international competition. Use clearer links to explain how each point follows from the previous one, and consider separating or more carefully grouping related arguments. This would make the progression smoother and references between ideas clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “higher education,” “literacy rate,” “technological trends,” “innovations,” and “job satisfaction.” These choices help communicate the main argument, and you attempt more formal expressions such as “the need of the hour.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, though: “development stage of a country” and “the nation evolves around new technological trends” do not express your intended meanings naturally. There are also spelling errors, including “develpoment” and “goverment,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise academic collocations and proofread spelling; for example, describe how education “contributes to national development” rather than saying development is determined by education.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “if the people are more educated and professional” and a purpose clause in “in order to compete and match the pace of the modern world.” Most sentences remain understandable, and errors rarely prevent the reader from following your meaning. Some grammatical patterns need closer control. In “The nation evolves around new technological trends, innovations and better infrastructure, if the people are more educated,” the conditional clause is awkwardly placed and the relationship between the clauses is unclear. “There are few challenges” also needs an article choice that matches the intended meaning. Practise building clear cause-and-effect sentences and check articles, clause placement, and punctuation when editing.
