IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries these days, the number of people continuing their education after school has increased, and the range of courses available at universities and colleges has also increased.
Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays in many countries, majority of the students are pursuing further education after completing their school and educational institutes now offer a wide range of courses to students. While this is a contentious development, I strongly believe both the trends are positive.
On the one hand, individuals with higher education find it easier to get a job. Higher education allows individuals to become highly skilled and obtain specific domain knowledge. As a result, they can higher educational qualification , which will help in reducing social inequality in the society.
On the other hand, universities and colleges now offer a range of courses to the students. This is a positive development because employers look for people with relevant educational qualification. For instance, if a student who wants to become a teacher, can enrol in a teaching course that focuses solely on training the teaching skills. Therefore, comparatively it will be easier for these graduates to land a job as a teacher or a tutor after finishing their education than a graduate with no teaching background.
In conclusion, I strongly believe both the developments are beneficial. Students with higher education find it easy to get a job reducing social inequality in the society. Also, students can take a specifc course making them job

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
Your position is clear: you consider both increased participation in further education and the wider course choice positive. You address both developments and give relevant reasons, including improved job prospects and the example of teacher training. However, the explanation that higher education reduces social inequality is asserted rather than shown, and the second body paragraph develops course choice more fully than the first trend. The conclusion is cut off at “making them job…”, so it does not complete the final point. The response also falls short of the required minimum length, which limits the opportunity to explain and support your ideas. Develop each reason with a clearer explanation or example and finish the conclusion fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs signposted by “On the one hand” and “On the other hand”, and a conclusion. This makes the overall direction easy to follow, and links such as “As a result” and “For instance” help connect claims to explanations. However, the first body paragraph’s reasoning is difficult to follow because the sentence about obtaining a qualification is incomplete, and the conclusion ends mid-thought. The repeated summary of job prospects also adds little progression. Make each paragraph’s main point and supporting explanation complete, and ensure the conclusion synthesises both arguments rather than stopping abruptly.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “higher education”, “specific domain knowledge”, “social inequality”, “relevant educational qualification” and “teaching skills”. These choices communicate the subject clearly, and phrases such as “land a job” show some flexibility. There are, however, several awkward or inaccurate expressions: “majority of the students” needs a more natural construction, “educational institutes” is less precise than “institutions”, and “a specifc course” contains a spelling error. The phrase “higher educational qualification” is also repeated and does not fit the incomplete sentence around it. Aim for more natural collocations and check spelling, while varying repeated wording.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex forms, including the contrastive opening “While this is a contentious development…” and the conditional example beginning “if a student…”. Most of the intended meaning remains understandable, but some sentence structures are incomplete or incorrectly formed. In “they can higher educational qualification”, the verb phrase is missing; “if a student who wants to become a teacher, can enrol” has an unnecessary relative clause and comma; and the final sentence is unfinished. There are also article and agreement issues in “majority of the students” and “a range of courses to the students”. Build complete clauses with a clear subject and verb, and proofread punctuation and sentence endings.
