IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries these days, the number of people continuing their education after school has increased, and the range of courses available at universities and colleges has also increased.

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It has been observed that the rate of people continuing their study after school have been increased and the courses available at the university has increased with the people too. In my opinion, this increase is a positive development for the people who wants to continue their studies after school.

The more number of people will increase to continue their studies after school wil help create awareness and literacy among them.It will benefit the young youth to start their earning a little earlier and to make them financially independent. The increase in the courses would lead to the learning new skill and would give better clarity to the students about the career they want to pursue. Different courses develops different skills among the students such as power BI, MS Excel, MS Word and SAP. These will help them find their keen interest and generate a good amount of money for the individual projects through freelancing. In my opinion, the courses that a univeristy should add to their course line must be computer programming, foreign languages, business analytics, social behaviour and sex education. These courses will not only help to develop new skills but also teach them about the basic ethics. Our universities lack adding basic ethics and sex education courses which actually enhances people character in positive way. On the other hand, there are negative development too. If the only aim of study is the job, it will lead to job market saturation and may be people will never develop a thought of buliding their own business. In the same way, increasing the courses will lead to confusion and unnecessary burden. Students will become pressured to completed the course which not for their interest.

In my opinion, there is positive development for increase in number people continuing their studies and increase of courses in university.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You give a clear overall view that the increase is positive, and you address both increased participation in education and the wider range of courses. Relevant points include gaining skills, becoming financially independent, and the risk of job-market saturation. However, the position is not fully sustained: the final paragraph simply repeats your view, while the counterargument about pressure and confusion is not weighed against the benefits. Several ideas are asserted rather than explained—for example, how studying helps young people earn earlier, or how ethics and sex education improve character. Develop fewer points with a specific explanation or example, and make your conclusion show why the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has an introduction, a developed body paragraph and a concluding statement, and the ideas are generally related to the question. You also use linking expressions such as “On the other hand” and “In the same way” to signal a shift. However, most of the discussion is packed into one long body paragraph, so the progression from benefits to course examples and then disadvantages is difficult to follow. Some links are also unclear: “The more number of people will increase” does not clearly connect the subject to the intended result, and “In the same way” does not accurately introduce the point about course-related pressure. Use separate paragraphs for benefits and drawbacks, and make each paragraph develop one main idea with clear references and transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “financially independent,” “job market saturation,” “freelancing,” and “career,” and these help communicate relevant ideas. There is also an attempt to name specific course areas and software skills. However, the range is limited by repeated use of “increase,” “courses,” and “students,” while several phrases are awkward or imprecise, such as “the young youth,” “course line,” and “find their keen interest.” Spelling errors such as “univeristy” and “buliding” also reduce accuracy. Build a more precise set of education-related collocations and check spelling; for example, describe students as developing “marketable skills” or identifying “areas of interest.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a conditional structure in “If the only aim of study is the job, it will lead to job market saturation.” However, control is inconsistent, and errors occur in basic agreement, verb forms and sentence construction. For example, “the courses available at the university has increased” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “Different courses develops” also mismatches the plural subject and verb. The opening sentence contains several errors that make its meaning harder to process, and “Students will become pressured to completed” has an incorrect verb form. Practise checking each sentence for a clear subject and verb, agreement, and the correct infinitive or participle after verbs such as “become.”
