IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries these days, the number of people continuing their education after school has increased, and the range of courses available at universities and colleges has also increased.
Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
I think this is a very positive message which is shared in the world. I feel continuing an individual's education is one of the great thing to happen. In ancient time people used to educate their childrens to a certain age then they have to start working by their own. But i personally feel if an individual has no limit to study then they shoul go for it, because of this an individual gets more opportunity to explore and to gain their knowledge. Also in today's world too, some people still believe that education is not hat imporant or their chi, dren can just finish heir bachelore's degree then they can get married but this is absoultely wrong thinking. My father is a very great guy he always used to tell me that explore whatever you want tpo explore, and as much as you can because there is no limit and do not stop anywhere. You can go for bachelore's, Master's, PHD, and more and more. If you have abilty to achieve everything then go for it. Right now i'll be finishing my bachelore's degree but soon i'll going for my master's degree and my father never stops me for studying or exploring more and more. Also so many colleges and schools are offering us a wide range of courses over the world. If an indvidual does not wants o go for a particular degree then he or she can go for another degree too. The world offer us so many opportunities we just have to grab it at correct timing.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
Your position is clear: you consider continued education and a wider choice of courses positive. You support this with personal experience, especially your father’s encouragement and your plan to pursue a master’s degree, and you mention that students can choose another course if one option does not suit them. However, the response only partly develops the question. Most of the discussion focuses on studying for longer, while the benefits and possible drawbacks of the increased range of courses receive little explanation. Claims such as education offering “more opportunity” would be stronger with a specific example of how further study benefits individuals or society. Develop both parts of the topic more evenly and explain your examples in greater depth.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a recognisable positive position and moves from general views about education to your family experience and then to course choice. However, ideas are mostly presented as one continuous sequence, without paragraph breaks to show the stages of the argument. Linking words such as “Also” and “because” help connect points, but their repeated use makes the progression feel mechanical, and some connections are unclear—for example, the shift from people’s views about marriage to your father’s advice. Group related points into paragraphs, use a clear topic sentence for each, and make the relationship between claims and examples explicit. This would give the reader a clearer overall line of reasoning.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant vocabulary, including “opportunity,” “explore,” “degree,” and “wide range of courses,” so the main topic is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several expressions are imprecise or unnatural, such as “a very positive message which is shared in the world” and “grab it at correct timing.” Repetition of “more and more” and “go for it” also limits precision and formality. There are noticeable spelling errors, including “imporant,” “bachelore’s,” and “indvidual,” which can distract the reader. Aim for more precise academic collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, describe education as a “positive development” and say that students can “pursue further study.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including clauses with “because” and “if,” and the reader can usually follow your main meaning. However, the range is limited, and complex sentences are often faulty. Examples include “one of the great thing to happen,” “if an individual has no limit to study,” and “he or she can go for another degree too,” where agreement, sentence construction, or verb patterns need attention. Verb forms are also inconsistent in “Right now i'll be finishing my bachelore's degree but soon i'll going.” Capitalisation and punctuation are uneven, particularly the lowercase “i” and long sentences joined without clear punctuation. Practise accurate clause structures and review verb forms, agreement, and sentence boundaries.
