IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries these days, the number of people continuing their education after school has increased, and the range of courses available at universities and colleges has also increased.

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Most of the countries have started a good platform for studies. Now a days, there is a wide range of students who want to study further after schooling. There ia an increase im the number of students who want to pursue their education further.

However, this is an excellent achievement for any country because people are keen in getting more and more knowledge. Therefore, institutes like universities and colleges have increased the range of courses available for studying. Hence, this wide range of courses help students choose their area of research easily.

For instance, now a days, students who want to study IT courses will get many opportunities to pursue this field which is a good sign. Hence, there is a broad spectrum of all the available fields.

Therefore, i want to tell about my profession which i choose while studying. Back in the early 2000s physiotherapy was not liked by many people so, it was not choosen by most of the students but as the community is getting to know about the benefit of this specific field its worth is increasing day by day.

Hence, i think as the society is getting developed the importance of studying and being a scholar is increasing. However, being educated means you have ettiquates, ethics and you are a respectful citizen. As, there are many references about being educated because it is a key to success. People with good knowledge together make the society a good nation. So in my opinion this has an optimizing influence on the society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you consider the growth in further education and course choice positive, and you give relevant reasons, including greater access to knowledge and more opportunities in IT and physiotherapy. The personal example about physiotherapy also helps connect the topic to a real change in society. However, the response only partly develops the task: it focuses mainly on the benefits of education generally, rather than explaining in detail how the increased number of courses benefits students or considering any possible drawbacks. Claims such as education being “a key to success” remain broad and are not supported with specific explanation. To strengthen the response, develop two main reasons with clear cause-and-effect reasoning and concrete examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has an identifiable overall direction: it introduces the trend, gives examples, and ends by restating your positive view. Paragraph breaks also separate some of the ideas. However, progression is not consistently clear, and several sentences repeat the same point about more students studying and more courses being available. Linking words such as “Hence,” “Therefore,” and “However” are used frequently, sometimes where the relationship between ideas is not clear; for example, “However” does not introduce a contrasting point in the opening. The shift from course choice to personal profession and then to ethics is also abrupt. Organise the essay around distinct reasons, and use linking expressions only when they accurately show addition, contrast, or result.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “pursue their education,” “range of courses,” “physiotherapy,” and “broad spectrum,” which helps communicate the subject. There are also attempts at more formal expression, such as “optimizing influence.” However, the range is limited by repeated general words and phrases, including “good,” “increasing,” and “wide range.” Some choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “a good platform for studies,” “keen in getting” knowledge, and “its worth is increasing” do not express the intended ideas naturally. Spelling errors such as “choosen,” “ettiquates,” and “im” also affect accuracy. Build a more precise vocabulary for discussing access, course availability, and social benefits, and check spelling and collocations carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, including a reason-result structure in “because people are keen in getting more and more knowledge. Therefore…” and a conditional-style example beginning “as the community is getting to know…”. However, the range of sentence patterns is limited, and attempts to connect several clauses often produce faulty punctuation or structure. For example, “Back in the early 2000s physiotherapy was not liked by many people so, it was not choosen…” needs clearer clause separation, while “As, there are many references…” is an incomplete or awkwardly attached sentence. There are also errors in agreement and sentence boundaries, as in “this wide range of courses help” and “nation.So.” Practise accurate complex sentences and review subject–verb agreement, clause punctuation, and capitalisation.
