IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries these days, the number of people continuing their education after school has increased, and the range of courses available at universities and colleges has also increased.

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The literacy rate is increased in many countries due to the availability of wide range of courses available in universities now adays and i strongly believe that this a positive development because it provides a lots of career opportunities, professional growth and improve living behavior of the society.

According to my opinion if a wide range of courses available in university students will learn new skills and ideas which will eventually decrease the burden of poverty in the country because if you learn a new skill you will use it to earn money.

I am an Optometrist myself i have spent 5 years in university to learn skills and and now i am earning through this degree.

If we talk about the modern society now adays so the demand for the education and skill in increased because most of organization requires higher education like if we talk about the artificial intelligence health policies and works in the hospital you need higher education and skills to get job and opportunities in any sector.

I strongly agree that education plays a vital role in development and economy of any country which will eventually reduce the burden of poverty.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You clearly take a positive position, stating that wider course choice creates “career opportunities” and can help reduce poverty. Your personal example as an optometrist also gives the argument some relevant support. However, the response addresses the topic only partially: it focuses mainly on the benefits of education in general, with little explanation of why the increased range of courses is beneficial, and it does not consider any possible drawbacks. Several claims, such as education improving society and the economy, are repeated rather than developed with specific examples. The response is also 54 words below the required minimum, leaving limited space to explain and support your ideas. Develop two or three distinct reasons and illustrate each with a concrete example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable overall direction: it begins with your positive view, gives a personal example, and then discusses the need for education in modern workplaces. Linking expressions such as “because,” “if,” and “for example” help show relationships between ideas. However, the writing is presented as one continuous block, so the stages of the argument are not clearly separated into paragraphs. The progression also becomes repetitive: the points about earning money, job opportunities, poverty, and economic development overlap, and the final sentence largely restates the opening position. Use separate paragraphs for your position, supporting reasons, and conclusion, and make each paragraph add a distinct point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “career opportunities,” “professional growth,” “artificial intelligence,” and “higher education,” which makes your subject clear. There is also an attempt to express ideas beyond basic everyday language. However, the range is limited and several phrases are inaccurate or awkward, such as “improve living behavior,” “the demand for the education and skill in increased,” and “burden of poverty.” Spelling and word-form errors, including “now adays” and “organization,” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise collocations and check spelling and forms carefully. Reusing “education,” “skills,” and “opportunities” can be reduced by choosing more specific terms for each argument.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and longer conditional or explanatory sentences, for example, “if you learn a new skill you will use it to earn money.” This shows an effort to connect ideas using more than one sentence pattern. However, the range remains limited, and errors occur frequently enough to affect clarity. Examples include “The literacy rate is increased,” “I strongly believe that this a positive development,” and “the demand for the education and skill in increased.” These show problems with verb forms, missing verbs, articles, and agreement. There are also run-on sentences and inconsistent punctuation, particularly in the long sentence beginning “If we talk about the modern society.” Practise accurate sentence boundaries and check each sentence for a complete subject and verb.
