Student answer (Band 7.5)

The pie charts display results of a survey on foreign language teachers to find out why their students are studying a foreign language. Chart one delineate various reasons for learning a foreign language whereas chart two provides information whether the teachers felt if there has been a recent change in the reasons.

In general, foreign language teachers responded that the majority of students chose to learn a foreign language either for travel or for business/work. Teachers also reported that interest in buying an overseas property was a major reason leading to an increase in the number of people opting to acquire knowledge of a foreign language.

As per the first chart, teachers responded that 33% people chose to study a foreign language as they were planning to travel overseas which was closely followed by 26% of people who opted to study the language as they gained employment in a foreign country or were looking for business opportunities abroad. Real estate investment in a foreign country motivated 19% people to learn a foreign language. social networking and personal development accounted for 7% each, followed by general interest at 5%. The lowest proportion of 3% belonged to people who had an overseas partner.

The second chart shows that 19% foreign language teachers reported that purchasing a property on foreign soil was the top most reason that drew more people into learning a foreign language. Business/work as a reason for studying the language was reported by 7% teachers. Personal development was given as a reason by 3% foreign language trainers. However, travel saw the most dramatic decline of all the reasons as only 3% teachers believed it to be the factor for increased interest in a foreign language. Social networking as a factor was accounted by 15%, whereas only 6% and 4% reported general interest and foreign partner as reasons respectively. Further, a total of 15% teachers responded that there has been no change in the reasons.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all parts of the task by describing both pie charts and highlighting key trends. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with accurate data from the charts. The comparison between the two charts is well-handled, and you correctly identified the most significant figures. To reach a higher band, ensure that your overview is more distinct from the body paragraphs and perhaps synthesize the data more effectively rather than listing figures sequentially. Overall, you have provided a comprehensive report that fulfills the requirements of the task well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The report is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'as per', and 'however' to link ideas effectively. The progression of information is clear, moving from the general reasons to specific data points. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two charts. To improve, ensure that the transition between the two charts is smoother; currently, the shift to the second chart is a bit abrupt. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information clearly. Phrases like 'delineate', 'accounted for', and 'dramatic decline' show a good command of academic language. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'top most' (should be 'topmost') and 'foreign soil' (which is slightly informal/dramatic for this context). However, these do not impede communication. You have successfully used topic-specific vocabulary related to surveys and statistics. Continuing to refine your collocations will help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'chart two provides information whether' (missing 'on' or 'as to') and '33% people' (should be '33% of people'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article errors throughout the text. Despite these, your meaning is always clear, and the errors do not cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions in statistical descriptions.
