Student answer (Band 7.0)

The two pie charts depict the percentage of reasons why students choose to learn a new language, and the recent changes following reason

Overall, while initially travel topped the list, in the last few years, that of represents the smallest proportion. In addition, the percentage of students who reason to buy property overseas is in third rank in pie one, whereas that of in pie two is predominant.

Initially, the percentage of students who reason travel accounted for the largest share, at 33%, which was nearly fivefold that of personal development and social contacts, at 7% each. In addition, the figure for business was lower, at 26%, followed by buying property overseas, at 19%. Moreover, foreign partners and general interest have fewer options, at about 5% and 3%, respectively

Over the past few years, buy property overseas accounted for 34% of students' reasoning, the largest figure, followed by business at about 19%. The figure for social contacts and no change was the same, at about 15%, which was nearly four times that of foreign partners and personal development, at each 4%. The percentage of students who reported general interest witnessed an upward trend, at about 6%; the opposite trend could be seen in that of travel, which was 3%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all parts of the task by describing the two pie charts. You have identified the key features, such as the shift from travel to property investment, and provided supporting data. However, the report lacks a clear overview of the data as a whole. While you mention some trends, the introduction and the summary of the 'recent change' chart could be more clearly integrated. The description of the data is generally accurate, but ensure that the distinction between the two charts is consistently clear to the reader throughout the report.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized into paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a clear progression of ideas. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Moreover', and 'Initially' to link your points. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'that of represents the smallest proportion'. Improving the flow between sentences and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer back to their antecedents would enhance the overall coherence of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'predominant', 'accounted for', and 'upward trend'. However, there are some awkward phrasings and word choice errors, such as 'students who reason travel' (should be 'students who cite travel as a reason') and 'that of in pie two'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To reach a higher band, focus on more natural collocations and avoid repetitive structures when describing percentages.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'that of represents the smallest proportion' and 'at each 4%'. There are also issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the data, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency. Increasing your control over complex sentence structures and proofreading for minor grammatical slips will help improve your score.
