The pie charts below show responses by teachers of foreign languages in Britain to a survey concerning why their students are learning a foreign language. The first chart shows the main reason for learning a foreign language. The second chart shows how many teachers felt that there has been a recent change in the reason.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

The two pie charts present information about the reasons why British students are learning a foreign language and the percentage of teachers who reported an increase in the number of students for these reasons.

Overall, it is noticeable that the biggest part of the pie chart is ‘travel’, and buying property overseas is the most common reason for the recent increase. In the second chart, ‘travel’ is the least common reason for learning a foreign language.

According to the first chart, 33% of teachers believe that the most common reason for students to learn another language is travel. The next reason is business or work, which is chosen by 26% of teachers, and buying property overseas is the third with 19%. Social contacts and personal development are both 7%, while general interest is 5%, and 3% of teachers reported a foreign partner as the reason for learning a foreign language.

According to the second pie chart, the most common reason for an increase in students learning a foreign language is buying property overseas, with 34%. The next two reasons are business or work and social contacts, which are both 15%. Another 15% of teachers reported no change, while 6% of teachers said general interest, and personal development and foreign partners are both 4%. Finally, only 3% of teachers reported an increase in students because of travel.
