Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie charts present responses by tutors of foreign languages in the United Kingdom to a survey regarding the reasons students are learning a foreign language. The first chart illustrates the actual reason for learning a new language. The second chart depicts the number of teachers who felt there has a recent change in the reason.
Overall, it can be seen that the most common reason for a learning a foreign language is for travel, while having a foreign partner was recorded as the least reasons.
It is known that 33% of the reason why students learn new languages is for travel, closely followed by business/work, which is 26%%. Meanwhile, buying property overseas recorded 19%. Similarly, personal development and social contacts accounted about 7% of the reason. However, general interest and foreign partner are the least reasons why students study foreign languages, which is 5% and 3% respectively.
Regarding the number of teachers that reacted to change in the reason. They noted that buying property overseas has increased by 15%, while social contacts increased by 8%. On the other hand, travel, business/work reduced drastically by 30% and 15% respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the data, but the analysis is somewhat superficial. While you correctly identify the most and least common reasons, the second chart (the change in reasons) is described in a way that lacks clarity. You mention that travel and business/work 'reduced drastically,' but the data provided in the prompt (which you should treat as ground truth) indicates these are percentages of teachers reporting a change, not necessarily a decline in the reasons themselves. Furthermore, the report lacks a clear overview that synthesizes the relationship between the two charts. To improve, ensure you provide a more analytical summary of the trends rather than just listing figures.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Meanwhile,' 'Similarly,' and 'On the other hand' to link ideas. However, the transition between the first and second charts is abrupt. The second paragraph is a bit repetitive in its phrasing, such as 'is the least reasons' and 'is for travel.' Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'the latter,' 'this trend') is used more precisely would elevate the flow of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'illustrates,' 'depicts,' and 'accounted for.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'least reasons' is grammatically incorrect; 'least common reasons' would be more appropriate. Additionally, 'reacted to change' is not the most natural way to describe survey responses regarding trends. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary and ensure that collocations are used accurately, such as 'a shift in opinion' rather than 'reacted to change.'
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For instance, 'there has a recent change' should be 'there has been a recent change.' You also have issues with subject-verb agreement and punctuation, such as the double percentage sign '26%%.' While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for basic tense consistency and article usage to improve your accuracy.
