Student answer (Band 7.5)

The two pie charts illustrate the main reasons why students in Britain learn a foreign language and the percentage of teachers who reported recent changes in these reasons.

Overall, travel was the most common reason for learning a foreign language, whereas business/work and buying property overseas were also major reasons. In contrast, foreign partners and personal development accounted for the smallest proportions. The second chart also shows that buying property overseas experienced the greatest recent increase, while only a small proportion of teachers reported an increase for travel.

Looking first at the reasons for learning a foreign language, travel was the most popular reason, accounting for 33% of responses. This was followed by business/work and buying property overseas, at 26% and 19%, respectively. Meanwhile, personal development and social contacts each represented 7%, while general interest accounted for 5%. The least common reason was having a foreign partner, at just 3%.

Turning to the second pie chart, buying property overseas showed the largest recent increase, at 34%. This was followed by business/work, which accounted for 26%, while social contacts and no change were both reported by 15% of teachers. In comparison, general interest and personal development represented 6% and 4%, respectively. Finally, only 3% of teachers reported an increase in learning for travel, while 4% mentioned having a foreign partner.
