The pie charts below show responses by teachers of foreign languages in Britain to a survey concerning why their students are learning a foreign language. The first chart shows the main reason for learning a foreign language. The second chart shows how many teachers felt that there has been a recent change in the reason.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

Overall, travel was the most common reason for learning, accounting for 33%, while buying property overseas was the main reason for the recent increase, at 34%. In contrast, having a foreign partner was the least common reason in the first chart, whereas travel represented the smallest proportion in the second chart.

In the first chart, business/work was the second most popular reason, at 26%, followed by buying property overseas at 19%. Social contacts and personal development each accounted for 7%, while general interest represented 5%. Only 3% of teachers reported having a foreign partner as the main reason.

The second chart shows that 34% of teachers believed the increase was due to buying property overseas. Business/work accounted for 19%, while social contacts and no change were both 15%. General interest stood at 6%, and personal development and having a foreign partner each made up 4%. Travel was the smallest category, at just 3%.
