Student answer (Band 5.0)

The pie charts below depict the various percentages of views provided by teachers of foreign languages spoken by students in Britain.

The data shows that teachers were able to make comparisons on recent changes in foreign language spoken by students.

The initial main reason for learning a foreign language was for the sake of travelling giving a highest percentage of 33 percent which drastically trended down to 3 depicting a picture that there has been significant change on how travel has recently impacted the motivation on learning a foreign language.

Buying property was one of the least reason from inception at 19 percent but eventually had a drastic record recently and peaked to 34 percent.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the task by describing the data, but it struggles with clarity and accuracy. While you identify the main trends, the interpretation of the data is occasionally confusing. For instance, stating that travel 'drastically trended down to 3' is unclear without specifying units or context. Furthermore, the report lacks a clear overview or summary of the main trends, which is essential for a Band 6 or higher. The information is presented in a somewhat disjointed manner, and the connection between the two charts is not fully articulated. To improve, ensure you provide a clear summary of the most significant trends in the introduction or as a separate paragraph.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression between ideas is weak. The use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes mechanical, such as starting sentences with 'Perhaps' or 'One of the unique reasons'. The referencing is occasionally unclear; for example, the transition between the initial reasons and the recent changes feels abrupt. To improve, use a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'in contrast', 'furthermore') to connect your sentences and paragraphs more fluidly. Ensure that each paragraph has a clear focus, such as grouping the reasons that increased versus those that decreased.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks precision and sophistication. There are some awkward word choices, such as 'least reason from inception' and 'drastic record'. The spelling of 'investiments' is incorrect. While you attempt to use some descriptive language, the range is limited, and the phrasing often sounds unnatural. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and academic vocabulary appropriate for a report, such as 'experienced a significant decline' instead of 'drastically trended down'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'one of the least reason' (should be 'reasons') and 'giving a highest percentage' (should be 'giving the highest percentage'). There are also issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles to improve the overall accuracy of your writing.
