Student answer (Band 5.0)

The pie charts below illustrate responses by teachers of foreign languages in Britain to a survey concerning why their students are learning a foreign language.

Overall, the buying property overseas is prominent and next is business or work both are the main reasons for learning foreign language. But first travel source is good but after some time this source is decline.

On the one hand, the travel is 33%, teachers reporting this as most common reason for learning. And personal development and social contacts are only 7%. And foreign partner and general interest are only 5% for learning language. But buying property is 19% and business and work is only 26%.

On the other pie chart gives the information that buying property overseas is 34%, it is increasing as compared to the first pie chart. Moreover, business or work source is slightly decreasing, it only 19% of the teachers reporting. And foreign partner and personal development are only 4% reporting. Furthermore, general interest is 6% and social contacts is slightly increased. In addition to the no change, it is 15% teachers reporting. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to address the task but fails to provide a clear or accurate overview. The description of the data is often confusing, particularly when comparing the two charts. For instance, the statement 'travel sharply decrease, it is only 3% but in first it was increased' is inaccurate and confusing, as the first chart shows travel at 33%. The report lacks a logical summary of the main trends, and the data points are frequently misstated or presented in a way that makes the comparison difficult to follow. To improve, you must ensure that the data cited matches the charts precisely and that the overview highlights the most significant trends rather than listing individual percentages.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is often disjointed. While you use some cohesive devices like 'On the one hand' and 'Furthermore', they are often used incorrectly or do not logically connect the sentences. For example, the transition 'Therefore, in second pie chart travel sharply decrease' does not follow logically from the previous sentence. The referencing is also unclear at times, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between the two charts. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would significantly enhance the flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, often relying on basic structures to describe the data. Phrases like 'this source is decline' and 'is slightly increased' are grammatically incorrect and demonstrate a lack of control over word forms. There is little attempt to use a range of vocabulary to describe trends (e.g., 'fluctuate', 'remain stable', 'account for'). Many word choices are imprecise, such as using 'source' to refer to a category of data. To reach a higher band, you should focus on learning specific collocations for describing charts and graphs, such as 'account for', 'represent', and 'a significant proportion'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'travel... are 33%'), incorrect verb tenses, and missing articles. Sentence structures are mostly simple, and attempts at more complex sentences often result in errors, such as 'the buying property overseas is prominent and next is business or work both are the main reasons'. Punctuation is also inconsistent. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring that subjects and verbs agree, and using articles correctly before nouns. Proofreading for these common errors is essential.
