Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 2.0

The response is completely off-topic. The prompt asks for a report on a survey regarding why students learn foreign languages, but the student has written about television and device usage among 18-25-year-olds. Because the content does not address the provided prompt at all, it fails to meet the requirements of the task. Even if the data were relevant, the description of the trends is somewhat confusing and lacks a clear overview of the actual survey data requested. To improve, ensure you carefully read the prompt and analyze the specific data provided in the charts before beginning your report.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, and there is an attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In comparison', and 'In the first decade'. However, because the content is entirely irrelevant to the prompt, the logical progression is undermined. The referencing is sometimes unclear, such as 'one-third people', which lacks a preposition. While the structure follows the conventions of a report, the lack of connection to the actual task makes the coherence ineffective.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for describing trends (e.g., 'increased more than threefold', 'smallest segment', 'made up the significant addition'). However, there are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'highly watched device' instead of 'most popular device' and 'highly useable' instead of 'commonly used'. The range is limited, and the errors occasionally make the meaning slightly awkward, though the reader can generally understand the intended message regarding the data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'the conventional TV was used by one-third people' (missing 'of'), 'Flat-screen TV device watched by people' (missing a verb), and 'made second largest contribution in chart' (missing articles). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to demonstrate a lack of control over complex structures. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the grammatical inaccuracies are persistent throughout the text.
