IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The pie charts below show responses by teachers of foreign languages in Britain to a survey concerning why their students are learning a foreign language. The first chart shows the main reason for learning a foreign language. The second chart shows how many teachers felt that there has been a recent change in the reason.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

The pie charts compare the percentage distribution of the reasons for learning foreign language in UK by students shown by tutors and also recent change in learning language by people for the numerous reasons.

Overall, it is clear that Travel accounted for the largest proportion in first chart, whereas foreign partner represented the smallest share. Furthermore, there was a noticeable difference between both charts in terms of buying property overseas.

Looking first at common reasons for learning language, Travel constituted the largest proportion, at 33%. This was followed by business, which accounted for 26%. In comparison, buying property overseas represented 19% of the total. The figure for general interest was 2percentage points lower than that for personal development and social contacts. Foreign partner was witnessed lowest among all reasons at 3%

Turning to recent reasons , buying property overseas accounted for one third making it the largest category. By contrast, business made up only 19%. The proportion of general interest was 6%, which was twice than the corresponding figure for travel. Overall, the most noticeable difference can be seen in social contracts and no change, with percentage points 11% higher than personal development and foreign partner.
