Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response falls significantly short of the required 150-word minimum, containing only 97 words. Because of this severe under-length, the task cannot be fully addressed. Furthermore, the writing fails to adopt an appropriate academic report style, instead drifting into a personal essay discussing 'Ielts' and 'People like me learn it to buy property over seas'. While the student mentions some data points such as travelling and business, the overall presentation lacks a proper overview and fails to adequately select and report the key features from the two pie charts. This leads to a low band score under the Task Achievement criteria.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The response lacks proper paragraphing, consisting of a single short block of text that moves abruptly between different ideas without clear logical progression. Cohesive devices are minimal and rudimentary, relying on basic transitions or repetitive structures like 'Learning new languages...'. There is no clear structure typical of an Academic Task 1 report, making the overall organization faulty and difficult to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with frequent reliance on everyday phrases ('common reason', 'learning new language', 'better experience'). There are also noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'intrest' instead of 'interest' and 'over seas' written as two words. The lexical range is limited and inadequate for an academic response, failing to demonstrate the ability to paraphrase data effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The response features a very limited range of grammatical structures, primarily relying on simple sentences. There are several noticeable grammatical errors, such as 'the common reason for learning the foreign language for travelling' and 'Learning new language help the person', where subject-verb agreement and article usage are incorrect. While some meaning comes across, the high frequency of errors relative to the short length restricts the score.
