Student answer (Band 6.0)

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student covers all major parts of the task by reporting the main reasons for learning a foreign language and the recent changes reported by teachers. Key data points such as travel (33%) and buying property overseas (34% recent increase) are correctly identified and contrasted. However, there are some misinterpretations of the second chart; for instance, the student states that travel dropped from 33% to 3%, whereas the second chart actually shows that 3% of teachers noted an increase in travel as a reason, rather than the original percentage dropping. Additionally, minor data values are slightly inaccurate in places (e.g., social contacts and personal development). Nevertheless, an overall trend is successfully presented.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response is divided into logical paragraphs with an introduction, an overview, and detailed body paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used to signal transitions and comparisons, such as 'Overall', 'At a fleeting glance', and 'Contrastingly'. However, referencing is sometimes awkward or imprecise, such as 'the later given chart' and 'the genersl interest showed only 5% of the stacks'. Paragraphing is present and generally appropriate, but the logical progression within sentences occasionally falters due to awkward phrasing.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student attempts a range of vocabulary relevant to the visual data, including terms like 'major point', 'exception', 'surge', and 'setback'. However, there are numerous lexical and collocation errors, such as 'stacks' instead of proportions or percentages, 'simultainously' instead of simultaneously, and 'inclucate' instead of inculcate or learn. Spelling errors like 'genersl', 'droping', and 'rosed' detract from the overall quality, placing the response firmly in Band 5.5 to 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'The former chart draws attention of the main points... whereas the later given chart shows...'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward prepositions, such as 'when asked to the teachers', 'accounted to be', 'shares sharing the similar percent', and 'social contacts rosed for 7% only to almost more than ten'. These errors sometimes cause minor strain for the reader, though they do not completely impede communication.
