Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the task only partially, presenting a very limited and incomplete overview of the visual data. While the candidate attempts to outline some main features, such as the highest proportion for travel in the first chart and buying property in the second chart, the information is inaccurately reported in several places. For instance, the text claims that 'buying property is the largest proportion as compared to the travel which is the smallest proportion' in the second chart, whereas travel accounts for 3% and no change/social contacts are higher, though travel is indeed the lowest category listed. Furthermore, the response is incomplete, trailing off abruptly at the end with an unfinished sentence ('In second pie chart, buying property is the largest proportion as compared to the travel whic'). Ideas are poorly developed and lack a fully realised overview, keeping the response at this level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The information and ideas are not arranged with a clear overall progression. Although the candidate attempts to structure the report into paragraphs, the logical flow is disrupted by repetitive statements and abrupt transitions, such as restarting the discussion of the charts multiple times ('Travel accounted for...', 'In second pie chart...'). Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes inaccurately, such as the misuse of contrast markers like 'However' and 'as compared to' where simple comparison or listing is intended. Paragraphing is faulty, with the response breaking off mid-sentence at the conclusion, which prevents any coherent sense of structure or unified progression throughout the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items such as 'proportion', 'contributed', and 'overview', but struggles with appropriate word choice and collocation. For example, phrases like 'foreign partner contained the smallest proportion' and 'general interest was slight lesser' demonstrate weak lexical control. There are also instances of awkward phrasing and repetition of structures ('accounted for the highest proportion', 'largest proportion as compared to'). However, the meaning is generally decipherable despite these recurring lexical inadequacies and minor word-form errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent attempts at comparisons that are grammatically flawed. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('The both pie chart illustrates', 'personal development and social contacts countributed'), missing articles ('In second pie chart'), and incorrect comparative forms ('slight lesser'). Complex sentences are attempted using relative clauses and comparison structures, but these are frequently faulty. Punctuation is also problematic, and the response ends abruptly with an incomplete grammatical structure, causing persistent difficulty and distraction for the reader.
