Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response falls slightly short of the minimum word count requirement of 150 words. The student attempts to describe the two pie charts regarding reasons for learning a foreign language, but the coverage is limited and mechanical. While some main features are mentioned, such as travel and buying property being the highest percentages in their respective charts, the overview is extremely basic and lacks accurate detail. For instance, the student states that 'buying property shows highest percentage which is 34%', which is correct, but the overall summary only highlights isolated figures rather than synthesising the main trends across both charts. Furthermore, ideas remain underdeveloped and the response relies heavily on repetitive listing of data points without providing a clear, well-supported comparative overview.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The text exhibits some organisational structure, dividing the introduction, body, and conclusion into rudimentary paragraphs. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the logical flow between ideas is frequently disrupted. Cohesive devices are used mechanically or inaccurately, such as 'First of all,in the first chart shows that...' and 'Consequently, buying property shows...', which do not logically fit the relationships between the data points. Additionally, referencing is sometimes unclear, and the lack of sophisticated transitional phrases makes the progression of information disjointed and repetitive.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, reflecting a minimally adequate range for the task. The student frequently misuses lexical items and collocations, such as 'external language' instead of 'foreign language', 'cause to learning overcease language' instead of 'reasons for learning overseas languages', and 'social contants' instead of 'social contacts'. There are also noticeable word form and spelling inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'amd' and 'percntage', which detract from the overall quality. While the key topic is touched upon, the lack of precise vocabulary prevents the student from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammatical structures attempted are very basic, consisting mostly of simple sentences and faulty attempts at complex clauses. There are frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and agreement, such as 'The given chart provide' (subject-verb agreement error), 'how many change occurs' (pluralisation and tense issues), and missing prepositions or incorrect articles throughout the body paragraphs. Sentences often lack proper punctuation and structure, leading to run-on constructions like 'the travel percentage is highest which is 33%and business is the second highest percntage that is 26%'. These persistent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader in following the intended meaning.
