Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response achieves a minimal level of task completion, but fails to present a clear overview or accurately describe the data from both pie charts. The writer attempts to mention some figures, such as '7 percents' and '34 percent', but the selection of data is largely disjointed and inaccurate regarding the visual information provided. Furthermore, the response includes irrelevant personal commentary ('same way I am learning ilets here in this website') which detracts from the academic tone required for Task 1. To reach a higher level, the writer must comprehensively address all parts of the task, present an overview of main trends, and accurately report the data without including extraneous personal remarks.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.0
The writing lacks logical organization and a clear overall progression. Ideas are presented in a single, unbroken block of text without paragraphing, making the response difficult to follow. There is a severe lack of appropriate cohesive devices, and referencing is often unclear (e.g., jumping between general statements about learning languages and specific chart data without transitions). To improve coherence, the writer needs to group related information into logical paragraphs and use standard cohesive devices to guide the reader smoothly through the comparison of the two charts.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with frequent inaccuracies in word choice, form, and spelling. Phrases like 'foreign language speaker are investors' and 'general interested' demonstrate a limited lexical range that struggles to convey precise meanings. There are also inappropriate informal expressions and spelling slips. To improve in this criterion, the student needs to expand their vocabulary to include precise terms for describing statistical data, such as proportions, percentages, and trends, while ensuring correct word forms and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical range is extremely limited, consisting mostly of poorly controlled complex structures and run-on sentences. There are frequent errors in punctuation, sentence boundaries, verb forms, and subject-verb agreement, such as 'long as you don't know the languages you can't understand what is the other guy or person trying to say'. These frequent errors often cause difficulty for the reader and obscure the intended meaning. To achieve a higher score, the writer must demonstrate better control over basic sentence construction, use accurate punctuation to separate clauses, and reduce the frequency of grammatical mistakes.
