Student answer (Band 5.0)

There are two charts given by the teachers, Firstly they gave the pie chart that corresponds with why people learn foreign languages. 33% people learn new languages as they want to travel and experience new parts of the world while 25% people use new languages to expand their business in foreign areas. 19% people learn new languages to buy properties overseas due to various reasons like investments while 5% just learn languages as they have general interest in learning them. The rest of the people just learn new languages for social conacts and their own personal developments. Teachers also made another pie chart thats indicates that the reasons people are learning new languages are changing over time. There has been an increase in people who learn language to buy property overseas to 34% and there is also a slight increase in people who are generally interested. While travel has experienced a major decline to 3% and there has been a slight decline in business and work purposes.Other reasons like foreign partners are still almost same.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response attempts to describe both pie charts, but it only partially addresses the requirements of the task. While it identifies some key figures such as travel at thirty-three percent and business at twenty-six percent, it misinterprets significant portions of the visual data. Specifically, the second chart depicts a breakdown of percentages for recent increases, but the student mistakenly interprets these figures as absolute changes in the proportions themselves—such as claiming travel experienced a major decline to three percent, when three percent actually represents the proportion reporting an increase for travel. Furthermore, the overview is weak, lacking a clear summary of the main trends across both charts, and some proportions contain minor inaccuracies like twenty-five percent instead of twenty-six percent.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response shows some organization with basic linking words like 'while', but it lacks an overall progression and suffers from poor paragraphing. The entire report is lumped into a single block of text rather than being divided into a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. Referencing and cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or inadequate, making it harder for the reader to follow the flow of information smoothly from the first chart to the second. To improve, the student needs to structure the report into distinct paragraphs and use a wider variety of cohesive devices to guide the reader through the data comparisons.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic concepts related to percentages and reasons for learning languages, such as 'expand their business', 'investments', and 'general interest'. However, the range is somewhat limited and repetitive, with frequent reuse of the phrase 'learn new languages'. There are also minor lexical slips and inaccuracies, such as misspelling 'contacts' as 'conacts' and using 'thats' instead of 'that'. To reach a higher band, the student should aim to incorporate a wider variety of less common vocabulary and synonyms to describe statistical trends without relying on repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but it is constrained by a limited range of grammatical patterns and frequent errors. There are issues with article usage, such as omitting necessary articles or misusing them, and errors in pluralization like '33% people' instead of '33% of people'. Additionally, punctuation and sentence boundaries need better control, seen in awkward phrasings like 'Firsty they gave the pie chart'. While these errors rarely completely impede communication, their frequency causes noticeable distraction and places the writing firmly within the lower-middle band for grammatical accuracy.
