Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing the main reasons for learning foreign languages and the recent changes reported by teachers. However, the overview provided in the second paragraph contains inaccuracies and confusion regarding the data from the two distinct charts, incorrectly stating that buying property overseas and employment had remained the most important throughout, whereas the first chart shows travel was the most popular reason. While key features such as travel (33%) and buying property overseas (34%) are mentioned, some details are slightly confused or imprecise, which prevents a higher score. The information is presented, but the development and selection of features lack precision when comparing the two charts.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure, moving from an introduction to an overview, and then detailing the first and second charts respectively. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader, such as 'The first pie chart', 'The second most popular reason', and 'The second pie chart represents'. However, referencing and transitions are at times slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'The first pie chart shows' and 'The second pie chart represents'. Paragraphing is logical, yet the logical progression between sentences in the introduction and overview could be smoother to fully achieve a higher band.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'illustrate', 'accounted for', 'share', and 'significant rise'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors, such as spelling mistakes ('byuing' instead of 'buying') and awkward phrasing like 'results of survey addressing towards teachers' responses'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, but word choice and collocation are not always precise, which is characteristic of this level. Fortunately, these errors do not seriously impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and participial phrases such as 'accounting for 33%' and 'followed by buying property overseas'. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, including a misplaced comma in the opening sentence ('illustrate, the results'), tense inconsistencies ('had been remained'), and preposition errors ('due to byuing overseas property 34%'). While these errors do not impede overall comprehension, they occur regularly throughout the text, limiting the score for grammatical accuracy.
