Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie charts illustrate the responses received in a survey conducted on foreign language teachers in Britain on the topic of why students chose to learn a foriegn language.

Overall, both the graphs show the most prominent reason for learning an international language is business and work or acquiring property overseas whereas the least voted on reason was personal development and having a foreign partner.

The most common reason reported by teachers for students picking up a new language is divided between travel which is shared by 33% of educators, business and work which is at 26% while buying property abroad is reported by 19% of teachers, other reasons such as general interest, social contacts, personal development and foreign partner constitutes the lesser part in which having a foreign partner was reported by the least number of individuals.

The recent change in trend has led to some changes in the reasons for learning a foreign language which shows that the number of individuals who study language for travelling has dropped by a staggering amount. The new trend has resulted in an uprise in people who learn to buy properties abroad and to communicate with social contacts while the other reasons such as general interest, personal development and foreign partner did not see a significant increase or decrease this includes learning for buisness and work which has shown a slight decrease.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main reasons in the first chart and include several accurate figures, notably travel at 33%, work/business at 26%, and overseas property at 19%. However, the overview misidentifies the leading reason: travel, not work or property, is the largest category. It also calls personal development and having a foreign partner the least-voted reasons, although foreign partner alone is lowest at 3%, while general interest is 5% and two categories are 7%. The second chart is described mainly in broad terms, without reporting its key figures: property purchases show the largest increase (34%), while travel is only 3%. The claim that work/business decreased is unsupported because the chart reports increases, not decreases. Covering both charts with precise comparisons would make the report more complete and clear.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear four-paragraph structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the two charts. This gives the reader a generally coherent route through the information, and phrases such as “Overall” and “The recent change in trend” help signal the report’s stages. The first chart’s details are grouped sensibly, but the final paragraph becomes difficult to follow because several trends are combined in one long sentence, and “this includes” has an unclear reference. Some linking is also repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “which.” To strengthen progression, organise the second chart around its largest increase, smaller increases, and unchanged or declining categories, using shorter sentences and clearer references.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “survey,” “prominent reason,” “trend,” and “social contacts,” and the meaning is generally understandable. There are also attempts at more descriptive wording, such as “staggering amount” and “uprise,” but these are not well suited to neutral chart reporting; “staggering” overstates the data, while “uprise” is not the natural noun here. Several phrases are imprecise or awkward, including “the least voted on reason” and “the lesser part.” Spelling slips such as “foriegn” and “buisness” also reduce accuracy. Prefer conventional, precise reporting language and check spelling: for example, describe a category as “the least common reason” and a value as “accounted for” a percentage.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including the opening clause “which shows that…” and the contrast introduced by “whereas.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. In “other reasons … constitutes,” the plural subject requires “constitute”; “the number of individuals … has dropped” is also an awkward construction for describing a chart category. The sentence beginning “The new trend has resulted…” runs on and ends with the unclear structure “this includes learning…”. There are also occasional article and spacing issues, such as “study language” and the extra space in “study language.” Aim to keep comparisons in complete, controlled sentences and check subject–verb agreement and clause boundaries.
