Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two pie chart illustrates the main reason why most people are learning a foreign language and the percentage of the teachers who reported a recent change in these years.

Overall, travel was the most common reason for learning a foreign language. While foreign partner was the less common reason for learning foreign language. In contrast, buying overseas showed the biggest increase in recent years. While travel became much less important.

Looking at the first pie chart, 33% of teachers was reported that travel was the main reason why people learned foreign language. Bussiness and work was the second main reason accounted for 26%. The third one was buying property overseas represented for 19%. Meanwhile, personal development and social contacts were making up 7% of both. General interest was made up 5% and foreign partner at 3%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover both charts and give a relevant overview, identifying travel as the leading main reason and buying property overseas as the most frequently reported reason for a recent increase. Most figures are accurately selected, including 33%, 26%, 19% and 34%. However, the overview is not fully precise: “foreign partner was the less common reason” should make clear it was the least common main reason, while “buying overseas” is less specific than buying property overseas. The second chart also includes a notable 3% for travel and 15% reporting no change; although you mention no change, the phrase “15% was no change an increase” makes this comparison unclear. A more exact overview and clearer treatment of the second chart’s categories would make the report more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The report has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for each chart. This makes the information easy to locate, and phrases such as “Looking at the first pie chart” and “Turning to the second pie chart” guide the reader through the response. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, particularly through repeated “was represented” and “was made up” constructions. The overview also uses two sentence fragments beginning with “While,” which interrupts the flow and weakens the relationship between the comparisons. In the second-chart paragraph, “15% was no change an increase” is difficult to follow. Use complete sentences and connect related comparisons more naturally to improve progression and clarity.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing charts, including “accounted for,” “represented,” “percentage,” and “highest.” These choices help communicate the main comparisons, and the reader can generally understand the data. However, some wording is imprecise or awkward: “buying overseas” omits the important word “property,” and “the less common reason” is less exact than “the least common reason.” There is also repetition of “represented” and “made up,” while “Bussiness” is misspelled. Aim for more precise chart language and vary reporting verbs without forcing synonyms. For example, “stood at” and “constituted” can be used selectively, while keeping category labels consistent with the chart.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the contrast in “While foreign partner was the less common reason” and the participle phrase “buying property overseas represented for 19%.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors remain. In “33% of teachers was reported,” the subject requires a plural verb and a different construction; “33% of teachers reported” would be clearer. “Social contacts was” also has subject–verb disagreement, and “represented for 19%” uses an incorrect grammatical pattern. The two overview clauses beginning with “While” are fragments, and “15% was no change an increase” lacks a clear sentence structure. Check agreement, sentence completeness, and verb patterns when editing.
