Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response identifies the charts’ general subject and offers a basic overview, noting that business/work is a common reason and buying property overseas has recently increased. However, it does not adequately report the data: the only figure given is the unfinished statement that 33% learn a language, with no clear explanation of what that percentage represents or comparison with other categories. The overview also inaccurately suggests business/work is the most common reason, whereas travel is highest at 33% and business/work is 26%. The response is incomplete and contains only 101 words, below the required 150; 19 words copied from the prompt were excluded from the count. Include the main figures and comparisons from both charts, and complete the report.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an introduction is followed by an overview and then a paragraph beginning “To commence with”. This gives the reader some sense of report structure. However, the progression stops abruptly, and the final paragraph ends mid-sentence, so neither chart is systematically described. Connections between ideas are also unclear: “While, other chart” is not a complete contrast, and “Overall” introduces claims that are not then supported with data. To improve, use distinct paragraphs for the overview and key details, group related categories, and use linking phrases to make comparisons explicit. Ensure each paragraph develops a complete point.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response attempts some task-appropriate vocabulary, including “survey”, “percentage”, “common reasons” and “recent change”. However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or repetitive, which makes parts of the report difficult to interpret. For example, “survey worries why” does not express the survey’s purpose, and “common and recent reasons of learning foreign learning another language” is unclear. There are also spelling errors such as “lanuguage”, alongside repeated use of “language” and “reason”. Use precise chart-reporting phrases and the exact category labels, such as “teachers reported” and “the most common reason”. This would make the limited range more effective and clearer.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response includes some attempts at complex sentence forms, such as “While, other chart depicts…” and “Overall, it is evident that…”, but control is inconsistent. Errors in sentence construction and articles appear in “learning a another language” and “While, other chart depicts”; the latter is also an incomplete contrast clause. The sentence “It considered that…” lacks a clear grammatical subject and auxiliary, while “The 33% of population learn…” has problems with article use and sentence completion. Punctuation and spacing are also inconsistent, with missing spaces after full stops. Practise forming complete sentences with accurate articles and subjects, and check each sentence for a clear main clause before adding complex structures.
