Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The report identifies travel as the leading reason (33%) and includes the figures for business/work (26%) and buying property overseas (19%), so some relevant information is selected accurately. However, it addresses only the first chart: the second chart is merely mentioned, with no figures or meaningful comparison, and there is no clear overview of the main changes. The statement that the three smaller reasons total 21% is accurate, but it does not compensate for the missing chart analysis. The response is also 54 words below the required minimum, leaving the task substantially incomplete. To improve, summarise the key pattern in both charts and compare the reported increase for buying property with the other reasons and the 15% reporting no change.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: the opening introduces the charts, and “From the first pie chart” signals a move to data. Linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “Furthermore” are also used. However, the progression is weak because the second chart receives only a repeated, unfinished introduction, and the final paragraph adds no information. “Followed by travel” is unclear after travel has already been named as the largest category, making the comparison difficult to follow. The report would be more coherent with a brief overview followed by one paragraph on the main reasons and another comparing the recent-change responses. Use linking words to show precise relationships rather than simply to begin sentences.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses some task-relevant vocabulary, including “proportion,” “business work,” “buying property overseas,” and “personal development,” and the reader can generally identify the categories being discussed. There are, however, noticeable problems with word choice and collocation: “crucial reasons” and “students adopting a foreign language” are not natural ways to describe the chart, while “changes accounted for several reasons” is unclear. “Concern about travel” also does not accurately express that travel is the reported reason. The misspelling “learing” further reduces accuracy. Aim for standard chart-reporting phrases such as “the main reason for learning” and “teachers reporting an increase,” and check spelling and category labels carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts a few different sentence patterns, including a sentence beginning “Whereas” and one using “followed by,” but control is inconsistent. In “the majority of students learning foreign languages are concern about travel,” the complement is not correctly formed; “the proportion … are accounted for” also has an agreement and construction problem. The sentence beginning “Whereas” is a fragment because it is not joined to a main clause. Most sentences are simple, and the attempted complex structures are not consistently accurate, which limits clarity. Practise complete comparisons and accurate reporting structures, for example, “Travel was the most common reason, at 33%, while business/work accounted for 26%.” Check subject–verb agreement and ensure every sentence has a complete main clause.
