Student answer (Band 4.5)

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response identifies that the visuals concern reasons for learning a foreign language, and it attempts to compare travel with buying property overseas. However, it does not adequately describe the charts: it gives no accurate figures and omits most categories. The claim that travel is “less more then half” in the second chart is unclear and incorrect; travel accounts for 3% of reported recent increases, compared with 33% as the main reason in the first chart. Buying property overseas is indeed the largest recent-increase category at 34%, but this key comparison is not explained. The report is also far below the required 150 words. Include a clear overview and select several accurate figures to support the main comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: the opening identifies the two charts, followed by a short paragraph mentioning travel and overseas property. The linking words “Furthermore” and “while” show an effort to connect ideas. However, the report has no developed overview or logical sequence of comparisons, and the second paragraph is too brief to establish clear progression. The phrase “another pie chart represents percentage of teachers reporting in extra aspects” also leaves the relationship between the charts unclear. Organise the report into an introduction, an overview of the main patterns, and a body comparing the most important figures. Use linking expressions to clarify contrasts rather than simply adding another point.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some task-related vocabulary, including “pie chart,” “percentages,” “travel,” and “buying property overseas,” so the topic is recognisable. It also attempts more formal phrasing with “illustrates” and “represents.” However, the range is limited, and several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “in extra aspects,” “Most considerable of all,” and “less more then half.” These choices make the intended comparisons difficult to understand. Build a more precise set of chart-reporting phrases, such as “accounted for,” “was the most frequently reported reason,” and “the proportion reporting an increase.” Check collocations and spelling carefully, especially “than” when making comparisons.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response contains a few simple sentence patterns and attempts a subordinate clause in “while another pie chart represents…,” but the range remains narrow. Errors in sentence construction and agreement appear in “there are huge changes in the percentages of travel which is less more then half,” where the clause structure does not clearly express the comparison. The opening also omits articles in “learning foreign language,” and “buying property overseas is increased” uses an unsuitable verb form for describing chart data. These problems sometimes obscure meaning. Practise accurate comparative sentences and use past or present reporting forms consistently, for example, “Travel was the main reason for 33% of teachers, but only 3% reported a recent increase.”
