Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie charts illustrate the responses to a survey of teachers of foreign languages in Britain about the main reason their students are learning a foreign language and how many teachers felt a change in the reason. Overall, most of the students are learning foreign language due to travel purposes.

The highest amount of students are learning the language for travel purposes which is thirty-three percent and three percent of teachers report an increase in people learning. The least amount of people, which are three percent, are learning the language for their foreign partner and four percent of teachers report an increasing attendance. Nineteen percent of people are learning the language for buying property overseas and the highest percentage of teachers report the increase recently which is thirty-four percent.

Twenty-nine percent of students are learning for business and work, with nineteen percent of teachers reporting an increase. Seven percent of people are learning the language for personal development and the same percentage of people for social contacts also, with four percent and fifteen percent of teachers reporting a recent increase respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main reason overall—travel—and include several relevant figures, including 33% for travel, 19% for overseas property, and 34% for the recent increase in property-related learning. However, the report does not fully cover the second chart: it omits the 15% who reported no change and gives only a limited comparison of the reasons for recent increases. There is also a key data error: business/work is 26%, not 29%. The overview is brief and focuses only on travel, rather than summarising the contrast between travel as the leading current reason and overseas property as the most commonly increasing reason. A fuller overview and more accurate, balanced coverage would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction and overview are followed by details about several categories. The information is generally understandable, and linking phrases such as “Overall,” “which is,” and “with” help connect figures. However, the progression is somewhat list-like, with categories presented one after another rather than grouped into clear comparisons between the two charts. The second chart’s “no change” figure is omitted, which also leaves the account of that chart incomplete. Some references are unclear—for example, “four percent of teachers report an increasing attendance” does not clearly identify the change being described. Organise the details into more purposeful comparisons and use precise references to improve cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “survey,” “foreign partner,” “business and work,” “personal development,” and “recent increase.” These terms make the subject clear, and the response attempts to vary wording with phrases such as “highest amount” and “least amount.” However, some choices are imprecise or unnatural for describing chart data: “highest amount of students” and “least amount of people” are better expressed with “largest proportion” and “smallest proportion.” “Increasing attendance” does not accurately describe a rise in language learning, while “travel purposes” is less natural than “travel.” Aim for precise statistical collocations and avoid substituting vague wording for the chart’s categories.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple statements and longer sentences, including clauses linked with “which” and “with,” and the main information is generally easy to follow. Some grammatical errors remain. In the opening, “learning foreign language” needs an article or plural form, and “a change in the reason” is awkwardly structured. In “The highest amount of students are learning,” the subject phrase and verb do not agree naturally; “the largest proportion of students is learning” would be more controlled. The sentence beginning “Seven percent of people are learning…” also becomes cumbersome as it joins two categories and their figures. Work on articles, agreement, and clearer sentence boundaries while retaining some complex structures.
