Student answer (Band 6.5)

Many people regard work to be of prime importance and show little inclination towards other things while there are others who are more enthusiastic about their hobbies and leisure activities as compared to their jobs.

This essay will discuss sides of the view and give a clear opinion.

There is no denying the fact that work is the most crucial of all. Dedicated workers are valued not only by their employers but also by the society at large. Many people even work overtime to justify their salaries. Finding employment in today's competitive world is not easy and and must be appreciated. The success of an organisation depends upon it's hard working employees. Many move the corporate hierarchy through their devotion and focused approach towards work. The rise in salary and rank is also an indicator of a person's success.

But there are others who rather take things lightly and have a lack lustre approach towards work. They have a more pro-active approach towards their hobbies and other personal interests rather than their work. This approach is unfair as it shows great disregard for something that earns bread and butter for an individuals family. one needs to understand that are other educated and experienced people ready to replace them at their job. One need to understand to properly and optimally balance work and life. There is no harm in pursuing interests and hobbies as we have often seen people finding success in different fields. However, achieving it on the cost of work is not the best thing to do.

Overall, as they say, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. One need to strike a right balance. Employers too plan leisure activities these days for employees

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the importance of work is well-supported, the discussion on leisure interests is less balanced and occasionally drifts into moralizing rather than exploring the benefits of hobbies. The conclusion is abrupt and lacks a summary of the main points, which limits the depth of the response. To reach a higher band, ensure that both perspectives are explored with equal weight and that the conclusion synthesizes the arguments presented in the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'However' and 'Overall', but some transitions feel mechanical or repetitive. The referencing is generally clear, although the connection between the final sentence about employers and the rest of the paragraph is weak. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints, which helps the reader follow the argument. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common collocations, such as 'corporate hierarchy' and 'prime importance'. However, there are also instances of imprecise or slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'lack lustre approach' and 'earns bread and butter'. While these do not impede communication, they prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. Expanding the range of vocabulary to include more precise academic terms and avoiding idiomatic expressions that do not fit the formal tone would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('One need to understand', 'there are other educated... people'), punctuation errors (missing apostrophes in 'it's' and 'individuals'), and minor slips in sentence construction. While these errors are noticeable, they do not significantly impede the reader's understanding. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy, particularly with pluralization and possessive forms, and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures with greater precision.
