IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people regard work as the most important thing in life and have little interest in anything else. Other people are more enthusiastic about their hobbies and leisure interests than their jobs.
Discuss both these attitudes and give your own opinion.
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
People are divided on the basis of their interests and hobbies. There are many individuals who say that they highly prioritise their work and do not care about anything else, whereas others say that they value their hobbies and leisure interest than their jobs. I personally support the latter view.
On the one hand, there are individuals who find enjoyment in their job and they work continuously for greater number of hours without break. They feel motivated in doing so. Such people say that they do not or have very little interests in building their hobbies. They treat work as the ultimate thing and this is actually true because it is work which satisfies our needs by providing us money and the basic amenities that are needed to live a happy life.
On the other hand, there are individuals who are more enthusiastic about their hobbies and leisure interests. They argue that there are many more things to do other than work. They believe that if we work for long hours then there is a chance that the higher management may exploit by giving us more complex jobs. They are of the opinion that it is because of the hobbies and the leisure time that they are able to relieve their stress and strain from the job. They also argue that people should work on improving their hobbies such as going for a trek or visiting a new country and learning about their life styles and culture.
In conclusion, I believe that we need to give importance to the work we are doing, but should always draw a line between personal and professional life. I feel that if a person has some hobbies such as reading or drawing then it may help in his or her professional career as well.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both attitudes and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, though some points, such as the claim about management exploitation, are slightly underdeveloped and could benefit from more specific examples or logical expansion. The position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, ensure that the arguments are fully extended with more depth and nuance. For instance, the discussion on why work is seen as the 'ultimate thing' is a good start but could be bolstered by mentioning career progression or professional identity as additional factors.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to signal shifts in the argument. However, the use of referencing could be more sophisticated, and some transitions between sentences feel slightly mechanical. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensuring that the relationship between sentences is more fluid and less reliant on standard signposting.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally appropriate for the task and allows for clear communication. You use some good phrases like 'basic amenities', 'relieve their stress and strain', and 'draw a line'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler vocabulary. Some collocations are slightly unnatural, such as 'building their hobbies' or 'the ultimate thing'. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise, academic vocabulary and idiomatic expressions that demonstrate a higher level of lexical flexibility and control over nuance.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are recurring grammatical errors, such as 'do not or have very little interests' (should be 'have little interest') and 'the higher management may exploit by giving us' (missing an object, e.g., 'exploit employees'). Punctuation is generally accurate, but there are minor slips in article usage and pluralization. To improve, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and refining the use of complex sentence structures to ensure they are error-free, as this will help demonstrate better control.
