IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people regard work as the most important thing in life and have little interest in anything else. Other people are more enthusiastic about their hobbies and leisure interests than their jobs.
Discuss both these attitudes and give your own opinion.
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
A group of people believes that working is the most significant aspect of their lives and spent very less time in other activities. On the other hand, there are some people that consider their interests and hobbies are more important than their jobs. I will discuss both views in the following paragraphs and and my opinion is provided in the final paragraph.
The first and foremost group would be prioritizing their works because doing so can enhance their chances of getting a promotion or a salary increment. As income offers a source to nourish the family and to fulfil the personal their dreams that's why this group focuses on work rather then spending time in leisure activities. As it is depicted by a scientific research in which an increment offered by a company in Nigeria increased the productivity of the worker by 40%.
The later group of individuals might be arguing that happiness was never related to a job or the salary but it can only be achieved by spending time in the actions of interests. People often believe that they can chase their hobbies after they get enough money to be capable of doing but its not the reality. A research has shown that 98% employees update their lifestyle after they get an increment like hiring a housekeeper or buying an automatic washing machine so they never spend time doing the things they like.
I support the second argument as the dreams do not need a specific time or huge amount of capital to be fulfilled so a person should manage his time between the work and job.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding the 'later group' (leisure-focused) is slightly confusing, as the example provided about employees updating their lifestyle after an increment actually supports the work-focused perspective rather than the leisure-focused one. The essay would benefit from more logical expansion of the arguments to ensure the reader fully understands the reasoning behind each viewpoint. While the task is addressed, the supporting evidence is not always effectively linked to the main point, which prevents a higher score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the other hand' and 'The first and foremost group', but some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. There are also minor issues with referencing, such as the phrase 'The later group', which should be 'The latter group'. The progression of ideas is generally logical, but the connection between the research example in the third paragraph and the main argument is weak, which disrupts the flow of the paragraph.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. There are several instances of awkward phrasing or incorrect word choices, such as 'spent very less time' (should be 'spend very little time'), 'nourish the family' (should be 'support the family'), and 'actions of interests' (should be 'leisure activities' or 'hobbies'). While the meaning is generally clear, the vocabulary is somewhat basic and occasionally imprecise, which limits the score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'a group of people believes... and spent' (tense inconsistency), 'personal their dreams' (word order error), 'rather then' (should be 'rather than'), and 'its not the reality' (missing apostrophe). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are persistent throughout the text. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct use of articles, and consistent verb tense usage.
