Student answer (Band 7.0)

people has different perspectives about the role that work should play in their lives.whi9le some people consider their jobs to be their main priority and spend little to other activities, others place greater importance on hobbies and leisure interests. In my opinion, although having a successful career is important, maintaining a balance between work and personal life is essential for overall happiness.

On the one hand, some people regard work as the most important aspect of life because it provides financial security and opportunities for career development. By spending more time on their jobs and improving their professional skills, individuals may be able to earn higher salaries and achieve greater positions in their careers. For example, an employee who regularly takes on additional responsibilities and works longer hours may have a better chance of receiving a promotion. Therefore, for these people, dedicating most of their time to work can be a way of achieving both financial stability and professional success.

On the other hand, many people believe that hobbies and leisure activities are more important than their jobs because they provide opportunities to relax and enjoy life. Activities such as playing sports, travelling or spending time with friends can help individuals reduce stress and maintain their physical and mental well-being. For instance, a person who regularly exercises or spends time with family after work may feel more relaxed and motivated in their daily life. Consequently, giving sufficient attention to leisure activities can help people maintain a healthier work-life balance.

In conclusion, while some people devote most of their lives to their careers in order to achieve financial and professional success, others prefer to focus more on hobbies and leisure activities for relaxation and personal satisfaction. I believe that neither work nor leisure should completely dominate a person's life, and a balanced approach is the best way to achieve long-term success and happiness.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all parts of the prompt by discussing both attitudes toward work and leisure and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and well-supported with logical examples, such as the mention of promotions for career-focused individuals and stress reduction for those prioritizing hobbies. The position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, ensure that the development of ideas is slightly more nuanced; for instance, you could briefly touch upon the potential downsides of each extreme to demonstrate a deeper analytical approach to the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You have used cohesive devices effectively, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Consequently', to guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. The flow of information is smooth, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. To improve further, ensure that you avoid minor mechanical errors in punctuation, such as the missing space after the comma in your opening sentence, which can slightly disrupt the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas with precision. Phrases like 'financial security', 'professional success', and 'work-life balance' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is functional and appropriate for the task, it is largely standard. To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated or less common lexical items, such as 'career advancement', 'rejuvenation', or 'all-consuming', to demonstrate a more flexible and precise command of the language. Your word choice is generally accurate, and there are no significant errors that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control of grammar is generally strong. However, there are a few minor slips, such as 'people has' (should be 'people have') and the typo 'whi9le'. These are rare and do not impede communication. To move into the higher bands, ensure that you proofread for these small slips and aim for a slightly wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or passive constructions, to showcase your range more fully.
