Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 3.0
The response is completely off-topic. The prompt asks for a discussion on the balance between work and leisure/hobbies. Instead, the student writes about the reasons for learning languages, such as property investment, business, and personal relationships. Because the essay fails to address the prompt entirely, it cannot be assessed for task development or position. It does not engage with the core concepts of work-life balance or the specific attitudes mentioned in the instructions. Consequently, the response fails to meet the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The essay is structured as a list of reasons rather than a coherent argument. While the student uses transition words like 'Second reason', 'Third reason', and 'Last but not the least', these are used mechanically and do not create logical flow or progression. The paragraphing is non-existent, as the entire response is presented as a single block of text. The lack of a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion makes the text difficult to follow, and the relationship between the ideas is not clearly established.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.5
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. The student relies on basic phrasing and makes frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'foreign as in third world countries' and 'personals and life partner relationships'. There is little attempt to use academic or topic-specific vocabulary. While the meaning is generally understandable, the lack of precision and the repetitive nature of the language indicate a limited range that struggles to express complex ideas effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The grammar is significantly flawed. There are frequent errors in sentence structure, such as run-on sentences and fragments. For example, 'In recent decade the rise in learning languages... is increased opportunities' is grammatically incoherent. There are also consistent errors with pluralization ('many people's', 'some people's') and verb tense consistency. The text lacks complex sentence structures, and the frequent grammatical errors often impede the reader's ability to grasp the intended meaning clearly.
