Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a personal opinion, meeting the basic requirements of the prompt. However, the development of ideas is limited. For example, the argument regarding hobbies focuses almost exclusively on reading and family time, rather than a broader discussion of leisure interests. Furthermore, the conclusion contradicts the body paragraphs; the student states they agree with the 'latter view' (work is essential) in the introduction, but the conclusion suggests they support the 'latter view' while describing the benefits of reading and family time. This inconsistency makes the position unclear and underdeveloped.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. Phrases like 'To commence with' and 'Having discussion at the length of topic' are used in a way that feels unnatural. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes confusing, such as the misuse of 'latter' and 'former' throughout the text. The progression of ideas is hindered by these logical gaps and the lack of smooth transitions between sentences, making the overall flow somewhat disjointed.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary range is limited and repetitive. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'majority of masses' instead of 'the majority of people', and 'strong there bond' instead of 'strengthen their bond'. The student relies on basic vocabulary and struggles to use less common lexical items accurately. Spelling errors, such as 'there' instead of 'their' and 'ai' instead of 'AI', are persistent throughout the essay. To improve, the student needs to focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and ensuring correct word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains a high frequency of grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There is a consistent confusion between 'there' and 'their', as well as frequent subject-verb agreement issues, such as 'people may fascinating' and 'masses may do job'. While there is an attempt to use complex structures, these are often faulty, leading to awkward phrasing. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with many sentences lacking proper capitalization or ending with incorrect punctuation. The range of structures is limited, and the errors are pervasive enough to affect the clarity of the writing.
