Some people regard work as the most important thing in life and have little interest in anything else. Other people are more enthusiastic about their hobbies and leisure interests than their jobs.

Discuss both these attitudes and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Whether work hard and skipping leisure activities render more benefits than being enthusiastic about leisure activities has sparked a heated debate. Some people affirm that working hard is most important in life and therefore, they take fewer in interest in other activities. However, others show more enthusiasm about hobbies. Personally, i am in favour of the latter view.

On the one hand, people who have a perspective to work hard and they neglect other entertaining and relaxing activities, achieve financial success in life. When they work throughout the day without caring of their personal health and spending time with family, they are more likely to achieve the biggest challenges in the life. As a result, they become financially stable and this enables them to get a good status in the society. However, they may face significant problems in terms of health in their later life and also, this makes their life bored and exhausted.

On the other hand, enthusiasm of taking part in entertaining activities and having useful hobbies has significant benefits. Firstly, it develops a sense of creativity and innovation in people when they follow their inner spirit. Being happy makes them mentally active and physically fit which help them to energetically perform their tasks. Even though, they prioritize their hobbies, however, a fewer time they spend in performing work-related activities allows them to achieve higher. Another significant point is that due to active, they have a strong ability to solve problem compared with those who limit their life.

In my opinion, being enthusiastic about hobbies and leisure activities have more benefits because it allows people to perform better in every field of their life. Following their interest allow them to be in the present which as a result lead them to manage their family, interests, and job at the same time.

In conclusion, Both perspectives have their unique advantageous points. The former view is beneficial in terms of achieving financial success and making a good position in society. The latter trend is more broad which makes people active and energetic. As a result, they can get success in different areas of their life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both attitudes and clearly stating a personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, though some arguments, such as the claim that workaholics achieve the 'biggest challenges in life,' are slightly underdeveloped and could benefit from more concrete examples. The position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, ensure that the supporting evidence for each viewpoint is more specific and logically linked to the core argument rather than relying on generalisations about health or financial success.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices are present (e.g., 'On the one hand', 'Another significant point', 'In conclusion'), though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. Referencing is generally clear, but there are instances where the flow between sentences is slightly disjointed, such as the transition between the health benefits of hobbies and the ability to solve problems. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common items like 'sparked a heated debate' and 'innovation,' which is positive. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'take fewer in interest' instead of 'take less interest' and 'due to active' instead of 'due to being active.' These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the essay from reaching a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('hobbies and leisure activities have' vs 'has'), article usage, and prepositions ('in the life'). Additionally, there are punctuation issues, such as the misuse of commas in 'Even though, they prioritize their hobbies, however, a fewer time...'. These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding the writer's intent. More attention to proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would improve the score.
