IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people regard work as the most important thing in life and have little interest in anything else. Other people are more enthusiastic about their hobbies and leisure interests than their jobs.

Discuss both these attitudes and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Work is the most important element of standard living. Some people think that work is most important and they dont show intrest in anything else, whereas other people say that they are more enthusiastic about their hobbies and not much intrested in jobs. From my opinion work is must in our life but there should be a balance of work and personal life. I will cite various reasons for the same and my explanation in the upcoming paragraphs.

To embark upon, work is very important in live because to live our life we have to invest in food, cloths, house and many more things and without work we cant earn to fulfill all there requirements. The value of work is known by those people who are finding work but not getting employed.Work helps in developmet of our mind, body and also our personality. Work provides respect in society. People who are employed contributes to the GDP of our country.

On the other hand, People are more intrested in their own hobbies and are less intrested for their jobs. People with background of big families can enjoy their live doing just their hobbies. If someones father owns a industry, factory, and any other big business then the child or any person from his family will relay on him for every kind of expense. These kind of people are not much suscessfull in their life. Without working out they dont understand how business works, how life goes and how everything takes place.

In conclusion, i would say that a person should work and earn good but also should do something which he or she finds good and thats their hobby. This would make them feel more fresh and also better for their body.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both attitudes towards work and hobbies and clearly stating a personal opinion. The writer's position is maintained throughout the essay. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and lacks specific, well-reasoned examples. For instance, the discussion on wealthy families relying on a family business is a bit generalized and superficial ('These kind of people are not much suscessfull in their life'). The ideas are relevant and fulfill the prompt's requirements, but they remain at a somewhat basic level of elaboration. Therefore, this performance fits the Band 6 descriptor well, as all parts of the task are addressed, but some ideas are under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organized into four paragraphs, following a standard introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. There is a clear overall progression in terms of discussing the two opposing views and then providing a conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes faulty, mechanical, or unnatural. Phrases like 'To embark upon' are misused as introductory cohesive devices. Furthermore, referencing and paragraph transitions are basic, and mechanical errors in punctuation (such as missing spaces after commas and periods throughout the text) disrupt the flow. This level of cohesion and paragraphing aligns with a Band 5.0 to 5.5, showing some organization but lacking smooth progression.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, touching on themes such as standard of living, basic requirements, GDP, and hobbies. However, there are noticeable spelling errors ('intrest', 'developmet', 'suscessfull', 'relay' instead of 'rely') and inaccurate word choices or collocations ('From my opinion' instead of 'In my opinion', 'earn good' instead of 'earn a good living'). The vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the message, but repetitive phrasing and frequent spelling errors restrict the score to a Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional structures and multi-clause sentences ('If someones father owns a industry, factory, and any other big business then the child...'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly missing articles ('to live our life we have to invest in food, cloths, house'), incorrect prepositions, punctuation errors (lack of spaces after punctuation marks), and apostrophe omissions ('someones', 'dont'). These errors frequently distract the reader, though they rarely impede overall communication entirely. This performance sits comfortably within the Band 5 descriptor.
