Overall Band Score: 4.5 · IELTS Complete Catalyst · 2026-09-24
IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people regard work as the most important thing in life and have little interest in anything else. Other people are more enthusiastic about their hobbies and leisure interests than their jobs.
Discuss both these attitudes and give your own opinion.
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 4.5)
To be honest, the people who choose their interests rather than doing something else are far more happier in their life and having almost no regrets and find their jobs more fascinating and engaging while the people who choose something just to earn more always find themselves regreting of choosing wrong field.
In my case, I had choose to persue english literature in my university but my interest was in LLB beacause i want to be a lawyer from childhood; however, my family force me to choose something else due to society expectation which consequently leads to my downfall and unsatisfaction.
Moreover, my sister had access to choose her field openly without any permission and she is more cheerful and happier than me in her life.
In conclusion, people who put work infront of their own will or interests are gradually less satisfied than the people who choose their hobbies.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 250 words, containing only 150 words. Consequently, the ideas are presented in a very truncated and under-developed manner. While the student attempts to discuss both attitudes—those who prioritize work versus those who prioritize hobbies—the exploration is superficial. A personal example is provided about university choices and a sister's experience, but the arguments lack the necessary extension and academic depth required for a Task 2 essay. The writer does manage to state a clear personal position regarding happiness and regret, but the severe under-length restriction caps the band score significantly under the official descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The essay is presented in an extremely brief format consisting of only four paragraphs, with the main body collapsed into a single massive, run-on sentence. Cohesive devices are minimal and basic, relying heavily on repetitive conjunctions such as 'and', 'while', and 'moreover'. There is a lack of clear logical progression and paragraphing is inadequate for an academic essay. Referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly with pronoun usage ('she is more cheerful and happier than me in her life'), making the flow mechanical and difficult to follow in places.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is largely basic and repetitive, such as 'happier', 'life', 'interests', and 'choose'. There are several word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'far more happier' (double comparative), 'regreting of choosing', and 'put work infront of'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary like 'fascinating', 'unsatisfaction', and 'expectation', but these are often flawed in form or context. The lexical range is minimally adequate to express basic personal ideas, but it falls short of the flexibility required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The text suffers from severe structural issues, most notably a first paragraph that consists of a single, excessively long, run-on sentence spanning nearly 60 words without proper punctuation breaks. There are numerous grammatical errors throughout, including tense inconsistencies ('had choose to persue'), spelling mistakes ('persue', 'beacause', 'regreting', 'infront'), and subject-verb agreement issues ('my family force me'). While simple structures are attempted alongside complex ones, the complex clauses are frequently faulty and cause strain for the reader.
