IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people regard work as the most important thing in life and have little interest in anything else. Other people are more enthusiastic about their hobbies and leisure interests than their jobs.

Discuss both these attitudes and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

A number of individuals think that work is the most significant factor in life and have almost no interest in something other than that. Other people claim to be more passionate about there hobbies and free time interest than their occupations. In this essay I will discuss both views and give my opinion in the conclusion.

On the one hand, work is essential and for some people the most important factor in life because an individual spends almost his whole life at their work place and he is most of the time at work than with his family. As a result, it is very crucial that the job is convenient and makes fun. To give an examole, if a woman works in an office from nine to five, she is nearly the whole day in this office and spend time with this group team. It will be horrible, if she associates her workplace as something she does not like to go to. That is why occupation is so significant.

Furthermore, people use to live a happy life if they earn a great revenue. Most human beings only work to earn themselves a living. If people do not have a salary, there is no possibility that they can achive their goals, such as practising hobbies or travel abroad.

On the other hand, a lot of people seperate their workplace and their private life because they know to be professional at their work, but at home or in their leisure time, they can be themselves and do whatever they want to do. Moreover, it is no secret that a huge proportion of people are always looking forward to their vacation in order to have fun and calm down from the stressful working days.

Moreover, work is usually the same, but there are plenty of hobbies that people can try out and participate in. There is more flexibility and dynamic in it and individuals have the opportunity to meet and connect with new people. For example, a man with a great family is usually exhausted after work, but during work his mood cheers up when he thinks about his hobby and friends that he will meet later. As a result, those people are more thrilled about their free time hobbies.

To conclude, it is quiet controversy if work is the most essential factor in life or leisure interests. Of course, working is crucial to earn money and fulfill wishes, but hobbies and free time interests can people help to carry on their work. From my perspective, people should not set a priority but should have fun at working and at their leisure time.

Paragraphing is used logically to separate the different viewpoints. However, some referencing is slightly repetitive or mechanical (e.g., frequent use of 'those people' and 'people'), and occasional awkward transitions slightly hinder the flow, preventing the score from reaching a Band 8. Cohesion is managed well enough to securely sit at Band 7.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision, employing terms such as 'significant factor', 'proportional', 'flexibility and dynamic', and 'exhausted'. The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over relative clauses and conditional structures (e.g., 'If people do not have a salary, there is no possibility that they can achieve their goals'). There are, however, frequent grammatical and punctuation errors that persist, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('hobbies and free time interests can people help'), tense inconsistencies ('spend time' instead of 'spends time'), and prepositional errors ('at working' instead of 'at work'). While complex structures are attempted, they are sometimes faulty. The mix of error-free sentences and recurring errors places this response comfortably at Band 6.
