IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people regard work as the most important thing in life and have little interest in anything else. Other people are more enthusiastic about their hobbies and leisure interests than their jobs.

Discuss both these attitudes and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Most of the individuals consider their professions as the most crucial part of the human existance and give less importance to other activites whereas the remaining locals are more focused on their curriculum activites and give little interest to their jobs. In my opinion, other activities can give people more benefits like fame, confidence, hardworking, skilled and money as well. This essay will discuss both the issues in the following paras with the suitable example.

Firstly, all the individuals become busy making their career that they don't even remember what they used to like or about their hidden talent beacuse of the pressure they get from the jobs. People should give more interest to their hobbies because you don't have to work under elder ones and can make your lifestyle even better by giving you fame and money. It can make people disciplined, confidence, conscious about their health and even more hardworking to get growth in their sucessful career. For example, if a famous cricketer named virat kohli didn't choose to continue his hobby which is a cricket and doing job instead, then he won't able to show his talents all over the world.

Secondly, if people choose jobs over other activites than it can help you to become more focus and make your mind competitive because they want to make more money and get promotions. Moreover, individuals become more punctual in their life. For example, a person working in a well-known company then he will definitely get his salary in the end of the month and doing good in his professions can lead to promotions.

In the conclusion, individuals should never forget about their skills which they can be more beneficial in their way of living. However, following their professions also can lead to better lifestyle.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both attitudes towards work and leisure, and provides a clear personal opinion in the introduction. Ideas are presented, such as the benefits of pursuing hobbies (fame, money, confidence) and the career advantages of focusing on jobs (punctual, competitive, promotions). However, some of the ideas are underdeveloped or lack logical consistency, such as the claim that hobbies inherently bring fame and money, or the slightly confused example regarding Virat Kohli. Additionally, the over-generalisation regarding career pressures and hidden talents keeps this response at Band 6.0, as the development is occasionally repetitive and lacks depth in supporting evidence.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a clear paragraphing structure with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to signal progression, such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In the conclusion'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical, as seen in phrases like 'discuss both the issues in the following paras with the suitable example' and awkward transitions between sentences. Pronoun referencing is occasionally unclear, such as shifting between 'people', 'you', and 'they' within the same paragraph. Paragraph progression is present, but mechanical linkage limits the score to Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'existance', 'curriculum activites', and 'competitive'. However, there are numerous word choice and spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'existance' instead of 'existence', 'activites' instead of 'activities', 'beacuse' instead of 'because', and 'sucessful' instead of 'successful'. Furthermore, collocation is occasionally strained, such as 'give more interest' instead of 'take an interest' or 'focus more'. Because these lexical errors are noticeable and detract from precision, the response achieves a Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conditional structures and relative clauses (e.g., 'if a famous cricketer named virat kohli didn't choose to continue his hobby...'). However, there is a lack of control over grammatical accuracy, with frequent errors in verb tense consistency, subject-verb agreement, and articles (e.g., 'which is a cricket', 'then he won't able to show', 'become more focus', 'at the end of the month'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, their frequency prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Therefore, a Band 5.0 is appropriate.
