Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the prompt minimally, attempting to discuss both attitudes towards work and leisure, though the position remains largely unclear and undeveloped. Ideas such as the lifestyle of European citizens or unmarried people are introduced as examples but remain very limited and under-developed. The arguments tend to over-generalise without providing robust supporting evidence. To move to a higher level, the writer needs to present a clearer, more consistent position throughout the essay and extend each main idea with well-developed explanations and relevant examples rather than listing disjointed points.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organisation with distinct paragraph breaks attempted, but the text lacks a clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or repetitively, such as the frequent reliance on 'Forexample' and 'These type of peoples'. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, making it difficult to follow the logical links between sentences and paragraphs. Paragraphing is not used effectively to structure the arguments clearly. To improve cohesion, the writer should use a wider variety of transitional markers accurately and ensure each paragraph focuses on a single, well-linked central theme with clear pronoun referencing.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, with noticeable errors in word form, spelling, and word choice that occasionally impede communication. Examples of lexical issues include misspellings like 'indiduals' instead of individuals, and awkward collocations such as 'not very well interests' and 'good value'. The range of vocabulary is minimally adequate for the task, but attempts to use less common words often result in errors. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their vocabulary range, pay closer attention to word formation and spelling, and ensure that words are used in appropriate collocations and contexts.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The essay demonstrates a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences, while attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty. There are frequent errors in verb forms, subject-verb agreement, articles, and plurals, such as 'Some citizens thing', 'these type of peoples is', and 'people whose spend'. These frequent errors can cause difficulty for the reader and occasionally distort the intended meaning. Punctuation control is also weak, with run-on sentences and missing capitalization. To progress, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of complex sentence structures with improved grammatical accuracy and control over basic agreement and tense rules.
